FRIDAY, March 31, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Dozens of studies have purportedly shown that a daily glass of wine or mug of beer could reduce your risk of heart disease and death.
But these studies are flawed, a new evidence review asserts, and the potential health benefits of moderate alcohol use vanish when those flaws and biases are taken into account.
At best, a drink or two each day has no effect good or ill on a person's health, while three or more drinks daily significantly increase the risk of an early death, researchers report.
"Low-level or moderate drinking is roughly defined between one drink per week and two drinks per day. That's the amount of alcohol that many studies, if you look at them uncritically, suggest reduces your risk of dying prematurely," said co-researcher Tim Stockwell. He is former director of the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.
But after adjusting for study flaws and biases, "the appearance of the benefit from moderate drinking greatly diminishes and, in some cases, vanishes altogether," Stockwell said.
A standard drink in the United States contains roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. That equates to about 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits.
For this analysis, Stockwell and his colleagues evaluated 107 studies that assessed the relationship between alcohol use and death. These studies included nearly 5 million participants from multiple countries.

It seems every few years one new study will emerge and negate the previous one.
Who cares, I'll still have a few nightly IPA's.
Alcohol is poison in excess. Even daily.
That stated, the best advice is cliche’:
All things in moderation.
“At best, a drink or two each day has no effect good or ill...”
I can live with that summation.
There are fewer people with dementia, heart disease, diabetes, kidney stones, gallbladder stones, bone problems, and constipation among people who drink beer.
Drinking beer every day could ward off dementia

When compared to abstainers, occasional and light to moderate drinkers were 22% less likely to develop the condition.
And those who consumed up to two-and-a-half pints a day had a 38% reduced risk of being diagnosed compared to non-drinkers. Even the biggest drinkers were 19% less likely to be a dementia sufferer than those who didn’t consume alcohol.
When the researchers probed deeper into the association, drinking 40g of ethanol per day, the equivalent to five units, was linked with a lower risk of dementia compared to those who had never had a tipple.
A drink or two can help you forget about experts.
I recommend Hennigans.
I once tried to get acclimated to the taste of wine for the alleged cardio benefits but literally everything I tried tasted like vinegar. Bottled, boxed, you name it. Had someone recommend some brand she guaranteed would not taste like vinegar..... it tasted like vinegar. All of them did.
Wasn’t that long ago they were touting ALL the great benefits of Red wine!!
Oh goody another study. No doubt some do-gooder is salivating to place more restrictions and higher taxes on alcohol.
That’s because we cull all the brain cells that make you forget crap. The only ones left are the remember cells.
Oh great another study, another group of researchers trying to make names for themselves.
About every five years a study comes out that says drinking over 3 cups of coffee is bad for your health. About five years later another study shows that drinking several cups of coffee is good for your heath. It goes in cycles.
I decided to drink three or four cups of coffee a day regardless of the studies! As an aside I am German/Norwegian from North Dakota and three cups a day of regular caffinate coffee is considered a light amount.
And defcaf-forget about it-it like drinking 3.2 beer.
That study was sponsored by the French wine industry. I’m still good with the results though.
Enjoy that cup of Joe with some thin-sliced Nokkelost on buttered toast. 😃
These are the same people who say eggs, butter and red meat are bad for you.
The problem is shared with the dim- witted reporters who suck up these stupid “studies” so they can get people to read a story
Only bugs are good for you.
I don’t care!!! I’ll have another glass of Paraduxx please.
It seems every few years one new study will emerge and negate the previous one.
