A 9-year-old backed out of a deal to sell her pet goat for slaughter. Local officials and sheriff's deputies used the power of the state to force her to go through with it.
A federal civil lawsuit alleges that sheriff's deputies from Shasta County, California, traveled across the state to seize a little girl's "beloved pet goat" for slaughter. New reporting details how they may have violated the law in doing so.
According to the lawsuit, in June 2022, Jessica Long and her daughter, who was 9 years old and only referred to as E.L., attended the Shasta District Fair. The fair includes a junior livestock auction, in which members of 4-H youth programs exhibit farm animals they've raised. At the end, the animals are sold to the highest bidders to be slaughtered for meat. The fair takes 7 percent of the sale, and the kids get to keep the rest.
In April, Long purchased her daughter a goat, whom she named Cedar. From then until the fair, E.L. "fed and cared for Cedar every day." She "bonded" with the animal just as she "would have bonded with a puppy" and "loved him as a family pet."

Sure does. Just ask anyone who has ever had to get divorced.
Be reasonable! If a 9 year old girl is mature enough to decide to become a 9 year old boy, she surely is old enough to understand the intricacies of three party contract law!
No, it doesn’t. One party can be unfaithful and benefit, etc.
“ Also, I don’t think you can enter into an enforceable contract with a nine year old.”
That’s why the parents had to sign the contract, not the child.
It appears the mother sold the goat so she is the mean one here, I think. Or, am I missing something in the story. I read it that she sold the goat at auction, someone bought it, and then when she realized how upset her daughter was, she tried to reverse the deal.
The Senator is named Sen. Brian Dahle and he’s Republican.
It was stupid of him to create an issue that will have emotional resonance with people, because many people would vote against him, who might have voted for him, because he used his power to take a goat away from a girl.
Yes, up until a certain point the girl should have had the right to back out, especially since her mom was willing to pay all penalties to keep the goat.
It would have been a class move to let the girl change her mind and learn a lesson in the process.
In marriage, there is a legal way to get out of a marriage, divorce. That controls support, division of property and debts, etc. You can’t just decide you are no longer married. (Though as you point out, many act that way.)
We Germans love pork. “Everything but the oink.”
You can make so much different type of meat altogether with pigs.
But I can’t believe bison is on this list, above goose and so on. Now I really have to wonder if it’s based on Weight, rather than number of animals. Just how many outside US eat bison?
And then, why are goat and sheep combined? Unfair. Not the same. Related, not the same.
I didn’t say there wasn’t a legal way out, doesn’t enforce the contract. People are regularly rewarded for violating the contract.
“Hmmm. Marriage is a contract. Does California enforce that?”
YES!
PETA lovers uniite!
Either way, that example has no relevance to the issue at hand.
Excellent job of explaining the legalities involved-kudos! However, I think most people just want to emote over this.
“I think I might use it to show up at poltical gatherings and ask the politician why he forced a nine year old girl to sell her pet so he could eat it.”
Why do you lie about this republican?
“Also, I don’t think you can enter into an enforceable contract with a nine year old.”
Parent/Guardian signs.
What lie have I told? Until the officers took the goat, there was no sale. The goat was in her possession. Any other type of sale, until the cash exchanged hands, could be cancelled by the buyer or seller without explanation.
And I’m saying that this stupid Republican, by being an indecent human being, handed the Democrats an issue that they can use during campaigns.
It’s an act of stupidity and abusive for this Republican Senator to force a nine year old girl to follow through on the sale when she had changed her mind and was still in possession of the goat.
It would have been classy of him and smart to not have forced the issue.
“This govt’s been acting as if they think citizens no longer have any rights and they can run roughshod over everyone.”
Theft is OK with you?
“What lie have I told?”
“I think I might use it to show up at poltical gatherings and ask the politician why he forced a nine year old girl to sell her pet so he could eat it.”
“Until the officers took the goat, there was no sale. The goat was in her possession.”
ROTFLMAO! She sold it at auction and the stole it.
“It was stupid of him to create an issue that will have emotional resonance with people, because many people would vote against him, who might have voted for him, because he used his power to take a goat away from a girl.”
GEEZE! What a bunch of false BS!
