A 9-year-old backed out of a deal to sell her pet goat for slaughter. Local officials and sheriff's deputies used the power of the state to force her to go through with it.
A federal civil lawsuit alleges that sheriff's deputies from Shasta County, California, traveled across the state to seize a little girl's "beloved pet goat" for slaughter. New reporting details how they may have violated the law in doing so.
According to the lawsuit, in June 2022, Jessica Long and her daughter, who was 9 years old and only referred to as E.L., attended the Shasta District Fair. The fair includes a junior livestock auction, in which members of 4-H youth programs exhibit farm animals they've raised. At the end, the animals are sold to the highest bidders to be slaughtered for meat. The fair takes 7 percent of the sale, and the kids get to keep the rest.
In April, Long purchased her daughter a goat, whom she named Cedar. From then until the fair, E.L. "fed and cared for Cedar every day." She "bonded" with the animal just as she "would have bonded with a puppy" and "loved him as a family pet."

Just another example of government abusing the electorate.
Moslems love goat meat. Just saying.
The term ‘anarcho-tyranny’ was coined in the 1990s by Samuel Francis, who argued it reconciled civil disorder with oppressive government. As he wrote, anarcho-tyranny is “the combination of oppressive government power against the innocent and the law-abiding and, simultaneously, a grotesque paralysis of the ability or the will to use that power to carry out basic public duties such as protection or public safety.”
Essentially, it is to oppress the innocent and to ignore the criminal.
Probably not a good idea to put anyone you love up for slaughter.
In contract law, it is not always necessary for consideration (“payment”) to change hands in order for an enforceable contract to exist. If both parties agree to the contract and one party takes action based on the representations and agreements in that contract, the contract is generally enforceable. An example would be if you ordered a custom cabinet from me, the after I went out and bought all of the materials you changed your mind. Because I had already taken action on the contract, I can enforce it even though you haven’t received the cabinet yet.
In this case, the family and the fair came to an agreement that the goat would be sold at auction. The fair proceeded based on that agreement, and in fact sold the goat to another party, creating a second enforceable contract between the fair and the buyers. The sellers cannot then claim there is no contract by refusing payment. To do so would violate the contract rights of the buyers. No abuse by the government in this case, they are just enforcing the original contract between the seller and the fair and the subsequent contract between the fair and the buyer. To cancel the sale would require the agreement of all three parties not just the seller.
She didn’t expect to bond with it.
Goat is the most widely consumed red meat in the world.
Americans eat a lot of cattle because we can.
Seems like they should have just dropped the entire thing really.
It would seem to me that would apply, if the girl had raised the goat with the expectation of selling it and the buyer was the one who backed out after she got it ready for sale.
I think I might use it to show up at poltical gatherings and ask the politician why he forced a nine year old girl to sell her pet so he could eat it.
It would be worth a few headlines.
“Goat is the most widely consumed red meat in the world.”
Not according to this:

And that surprises me somewhat, because some cultures don’t eat pork.
Did they bring some leftovers home?
I was thinking it would be Mos,emus came knocking at the farm and wanted their halal in the back lot.
As it is, she should have the right to back out and refuse.
But, any 4H kid should understand the practicalities of farming. That includes rabbits and other “cute” little animals, much less goats. They should be the kind who understand animals have practicality and we can’t always be so sentimental about them.
According to the UN-FAO pork is the most consumed animal meat in the world. Although it is thought to be “white meat,” it is actually classified as red meat according to the USDA.

Hmmm. Marriage is a contract. Does California enforce that?
This govt’s been acting as if they think citizens no longer have any rights and they can run roughshod over everyone.
Really getting sick of this.
Also, I don’t think you can enter into an enforceable contract with a nine year old.
I read the rest of the article (I know, who reads the article?) and it appears that Dahl, the politician, was fine with her backing out.
I hate politicians, but this time he doesn’t merit this beef (or mutton).
Goes both ways. Once either party takes concrete steps in reliance on the terms of the contract, the contract is generally enforceable.
Cops always tell us they can’t do anything on issues like this “it is a civil matter, our hands are tied”.
