Arizona police say the Family Dollar employee acknowledged the shooting was 'egregious'
An employee of an Arizona Family Dollar store has been charged with murder after police say he fired 10 shots at a shoplifter who punched him.
Kevin Salas Madrid, 24, confronted the serial shoplifter and told him to leave the store at which point the shoplifter punched him in the face which knocked off Madrid's eyeglasses, FOX 10 Phoenix reported.
Madrid then allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the shoplifter at least 10 times, including several times when the shoplifter was on the ground.
"Kevin stated he had made the worst decision of his life," police said in his probable cause statement.
"Kevin explained he was struck and decided to shoot but looking back, he realized it was egregious."
One employee in the store said that Madrid fired as many as 15 shots and admitted after the shooting that he could not control his anger, Arizona's Family reported.
Madrid has been booked into jail on a charge of second-degree murder.
The Phoenix Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
Fox News Digital reached out to Family Dollar for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Don’t talk to the police.
it’s a way of life for some of us.
Yeah, I was thinking “Shut up Kevin, you talk too much”.
Sounds like he “removed the threat”.
I would say the shoplifter made a worse decision to punch Kevin. Kevin can still do something positive with the rest of his life- even if in prison.
Shoplifter can’t do anything else, ended his life punching a guy while trying to steal. Only God can say for sure how that weighs out for eternity.
Too bad he ran out of ammunition.

Example #1,000,000 why you should not talk to the police. They might smile, and then say something pleasant like, “We just want to know what happened.”
That is a lie. They are just fishing for something that they could use as a confession. Do not talk to the police. Ask for a lawyer. And that’s it.
Not Guilty if I am on the jury.
Suspect if he gets before a jury with five or six Hispanics, the DA won’t be able to convict him.
I’ve never heard a Hispanic use that word. But then, I’ve never used it either. It’s too shyster lawyerly for me.
Yeah, that's right officer, and he smelled funny too..!
> Not Guilty if I am on the jury. <
Yep. But I’m thinking that this will not go to trial. The DA will offer the poor guy a deal. Plead guilty to a lesser charge, and accept three years in prison. Or ask for a jury trial, and risk 20 years to life.
The poor guy will probably take the deal. And that’s just the way America rolls these days. No good deed goes unpunished.
Reason right there to say NOTHING to police If that isn’t enough go to YouTube and look up “Don’t talk to police” by James Duane. Every freeper should watch this about once a year.
1 maybe 2 shots could get away with
15 is excessive, even if thought life was in danger
Kevin was just doing his job and protecting his life after being assaulted and protecting property he was entrusted with. Kevin just needs a larger clip.
With the right DA, he may walk without bail, pending a trial which may be changed to a misdemeanor because he was funning and did not mean to, with no priors, similar to what DA Alvin is famous for doing.
Feelings and skin tone take precedence over the rule of law.
Store clerk probably made like $12/hour at Family Dollar.
Is this standard for the police to be saying what the clerk said while he is in jail? Doesn’t that prejudice the case? I am not a lawyer, but it seems strange.
It seems like they need to offer a good deal to get a guilty plea, because there is a good chance a jury would acquit.
The defendant would be pretty happy to have me on the jury.
My sentiments as well.
