Just as the contaminated eye drops are killing and blinding people with infection, so can contaminants that touch the mucus membrane.
I use chlorinated water from the faucet, boil it, and let it cool in the neti pot. Contaminated neti pots can contaminate distilled water.
I also run the neti pot through the dishwasher on HOT water.
Swimming in pond, creek or river water can do the same thing.
We all did it and survived.

My understanding is that True Believers mix all sorts of herbs and potions in their Neti pots.
Also, it would not surprise me if they can purchase bottles of sacred water from the Ganges River or other famous water sources.
