ST. LOUIS, Tuesday, March 24.
The Democrat learns from a gentleman just from Vicksburgh, that the steamer Diligent, with the Eighth Missouri Regiment, had succeeded in entering Yazoo River above Haines' Bluff. Her course was through Cypress Dayou, which debouches into the Yazoo opposite JOHNSON'S plantation, where Gen. SHERMAN'S troops landed last December; thence through Shelle's Bayou into the Sunflower, which empties into the Yazoo twenty miles above Haines' Bluff. The Diligent was accompanied by a light gunboat.
As soon as it was found possible to get through, four iron-clads followed. Our informant also says that -- thousand men have gone up before this.
Our force can thus be placed between Haines' Bluff and Yazoo City, which will enable us to operate in the rear of the former position, and bring the latter between two fires.
It is also believed that our fleet can navigate the bayous and enter the Yazoo above Yazoo Pass, by which means our gunboats can cooperate with our forces at Greenwood, reduce Fort Pemberton, then throw their combined strength against Yazoo City, and flank the rebel position. Being thus turned Vicksburgh will undoubtedly be evacuated.
The batteries at Heine's Bluff were built to sweep down the river, and are powerless against an attack from above. Confirmation of these tidings is anxiously looked for.
The Democrat's special from below, of the 19th, says the rebels continued shelling the canal at Vicksburgh, retarding the prosecution of the work somewhat. The river is falling and the fears of the overflow of the camping ground has subsided.
All is quiet at Greenwood. Both parties are repairing damages. Our present force there is regarded insufficient to reduce the rebel fortifications. The levees are being cut, which, it is thought, would result in driving the rebels out.

Shelby Foote’s narrative of the Vicksburg campaign is brilliant.
BTW, this military engineering feat (accomplished through a lot of hard, miserable effort) is the probable source of the slang term “up the yahoo.”
