The US will see northern lights Friday — and great views even sooner

The northern lights may be traveling south and could be seen across the mainland US from the West to East coasts Thursday and Friday.

Not only that, but this is one of the most ideal times to gawk at the powerful color spectrum due to the change of seasons, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

“The best seasons for aurora watching are around the spring and fall equinoxes,” according to the agency.

“Due to subtleties in the way the solar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetosphere, there is a tendency toward larger geomagnetic storms, and thus better auroras, to occur near the equinoxes.”

Lovely thought, but Thursday and Friday wind, clouds and rain all of both days.

I was fortunate enough to have seen the ‘Northern Lights’ once in my life.

Happened when I was taking a road trip from Texas to Bismarck, ND. We were inside North Dakota in the middle of the night & I spotted these weird ‘spotlights’ pointing skyward. Seconds later I realized what I was witnessing.

Living in Texas all my life, I reckon I gotta take another trip north if I wanna see ‘em again.

I lived in Grand Forks. We saw the northern lights occasionally. When I was in Alaska, that was a treat.

Maybe it was snowing 🌨️ too hard for you to see the northern lights. 😆🤗 What I didn’t want to see, were the sun dogs. That usually meant REALLY cold weather.

We were driving along Hwy 83 north and between those small towns that dot the hiway so at first I was wondering what ‘big event’ necessitated bringing out spotlights in the middle of nowhere.

This all happened sometime in the early Summer of 1985 when my brother lived in Bismarck.

Around Sept 1991 we took a second road trip there. Visited Mt Rushmore, too. No sign of the northern lights on that trip but we did get a light coating of snow.

If my brother still lived up there I’d have an excuse to go back again. I enjoyed the area but he let us know about the gruesome winters in Bismarck.

I would say gruesome might be an understatement. The winters were utterly brutal.
I left Grand Forks in 1967, to join the USAF. One of the reasons I stayed in the USAF, was because, when I came back from Vietnam, they would have discharged me at the port, and the only place I could have gone, was Grand Forks, and I wasn’t having any of it. So, they sent me to Texas. (Del Rio. Yeah, THAT Del Rio, that was in the news) 😆🤗 Now, my son is a USAF plot. 👍

I’m willing to give it a try but first I likely need to find me a pair of hiking boots. I already broke in my hiking stick when I got me a new hip in 2019....

Oh my. It’s quite a hike. I’m looking into stem cell therapy for my knee so that I can get in some elk hunting again...I don’t like the other option...
