They were fighting a war that was of lower intensity and required fewer sacrifices and equipment. This is more the equivalent of ww1. They couldn't handle it. The Russia people are servile. But, they become whipped curs when they face extreme hardship for no reason at all.

That was when Russia had the vast resources of the people they had conquered, today it is just Russia and they don’t have that vast war machine, manpower, and capabilities.
Today those conquered people are free and have been accepted into NATO and have been shipping all of their old Soviet weapons to Ukraine so that the old Russian weapons can kill today’s Russians.
