FROM THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI: The First Reports from Port Hudson; Admiral Farragut’s Fleet Said to Have Passed the Batteries (3/24/1863)

The U.S. mail steamship Geo. Washington, Capt. GAGER, from New-Orleans on the 15th inst., with merchandise and passengers to H.B. CROMWELL Co., arrived yesterday morning.

The Washington, in addition to the regular mails, brings a mail from the British Consul, and a mail bag from the fleet off Galveston, per the U.S. gunboat Kathadin, which was met off the Bar.

She also brings telegraphic dispatches sent to her at the passes, embodying the latest intelligence la town from Baton Rouge, up to 4 P.M., on the 15th.

She met in the river, bound up, the propeller Fair Haven, with a draft of U.S. seamen on board. There was at the Bar and going up, the French ship Le Mauche, ships J.M. May, Sciota, Annie and Wizard King, and barks Comet, Fleet Wing, E. Wright and A. Barker.

The Washington experienced on the 80th and 21st, a very severe gale from E.N.E. to S.E.

THE FIRST NEWS FROM PORT HUDSON.

WASHINGTON, Monday, March 23.

The following was received here this morning, addressed to Col. STAGER, by steamer to New-York:

SOUTHWEST PASS, La., March 15, 1863.

By Telegraph from Baton Rouge, March 15.

Commodore FARRAGUT, leading in the Hartford, attacked the Port Hudson batteries last night, at 11 o'clock, with his fleet. The steamer Mississippi ran aground, was abandoned, and burned. The firing on both sides was rapid and severe. The army is within five miles of the enemy's works, in good spirits and bound to win. Cavalry skirmishes have been the only fighting as yet.

S.W. PASS, La., Sunday, March 15.

Commodore FARRAGUT passed the Port Hudson batteries, last night, with his fleet.
