A hilarious movie...that could NEVER be made today.

It was, indeed, hilarious. And, yes, it would be taboo today.

It was farcical to be sure, and it did strain the audience willingness to suspend disbelief. So funny, we did so willingly.

That said, it truly fell apart at the end. The last 20 or so minutes fell off the ledge.

And that said, several superior performances, most especially that of Madeline Kahn.

In the director’s commentary on one of the anniversary editions of the movie Mel addresses this. “People are always saying YOU COULDN’T MAKE THIS MOVIE TODAY, and they’re right. We couldn’t make this movie back THEN either! The studio was CONSTANTLY trying to cancel us.”
