Terrified workers fled a soaring new Manhattan skyscraper after experiencing a huge 'shake' run through the building, that made it feel as if its floors were collapsing.

One Vanderbilt, a $3.31 billion tower which sits just north of Grand Central train terminal in Midtown Manhattan, was struck by the tremor on Tuesday afternoon.

A spokesman for One Vanderbilt said the shaking was due to repair work on the elevators, and there were no injuries as the public viewing platform was closed.

I just thought that you were a rapper.

DJ are my first and middle initials. The MacWoW was from the Rysher Highlander forum, Mac Women of Wisdom, for the "over 40" posters.

I used to get my high heels stuck in the old wooden ones. I hated them! You had to stand on your toes or lose your shoe.

Were people trapped on the escalator? I thought you could just walk off.

Where are they getting the money to build new towers?

After 9/11, and with the disaster we have as a “president,” there’s no way in Hell I’d be in a high rise in NYC.

Google Grand Central Madison.

When I was a kid (and my grandma taught in NYC Public), we always marveled at diagrams of the Manhattan cross sections, how everything was underneath our feet, down 100 feet or more - water, sewer, steam, electric, gas, pneumatic tubes, vaults, subways, Pennsylvania and NY Central RR, foundations down to bedrock, etc.

They had amazing engineers who did all that stuff.

Today - not so much. Grand Central Madison took 60 years to build from concept and first shovel to opening in February 2023 - and this building is pretty near this new, huge cavern under the streets.

If I lived at One Vanderbilt, I would move.

And - regarding Grand Central, I have Vanderbilts in my family tree (Van Der Bilt), from Nieuw Utrecht, Breuckelen - but sadly we split off from then before any of them were rich.

Opened: September 14, 2020

Btw, just a heads up, loose, floppy handrails on escalators are also dangerous. Keep your hands on top of the rail to keep your fingers.

I know that the engineers who figure out how to build these have all the loads etc considered and calculated. Still, I’m not that trusting..

The only escalator I encounter is the one at the airport, and there are stairs too. Albuquerque is vertically challenged. You could live your whole life here and only use an elevator once every couple years.

There’s videos on YouTube about the event. It was scary how it went from seemingly nothing to an inferno.

This elevator is on the outside of that building. Imagine how this felt for whoever was in it at the time.
