THE WAR IN THE SOUTHWEST: Progress of the Siege of Vicksburgh; A Large Movement of Troops up the Yazoo (3/21/1863)

CINCINNATI, Friday, March 20.

Advices from Vicksburgh report the health of the army improving. The troops are enthusiastic with the prospect of an immediate engagement.

It is thought that the Lake Providence Canal, opposite Vicksburgh, will prove successful.

There has been a large movement of transports and gunboats up the Yazoo Pass.

The Atlanta Confederacy contains a detailed account of a brilliant and successful raid in North Alabama by the Federal brigade under Col. CORWIN. The expedition accompanied by gunboats reached Tuscumbia Feb. 22. The gunboats destroyed two ferry-boats at Tuscumbia, another at Florence, and afterward dropped down below Tuscumbia.

Soon after dark the Federal advance guard dashed into Tuscumbia, and dispersed the rebel cavalry, who fled to the mountains. Col. CORWIN occupied the town, and issued a proclamation, levying assessments on wealthy rebels.

On the 25th ult., Col. CORWIN proceeded into the interior, taking considerable plunder with him.

Nothing is published concerning the further progress of the raid.

The same paper complains bitterly of the numerous atrocities committed by the Yankee troops.

GEN. ROSECRAN'S DEPARTMENT.

Fighting Going on Near Milton.

MURFREESBORO, Friday, March 20.

Col. HALL's brigade, of Gen. REYNOLDS' division, was attacked near Milton to-day by a large force of rebel cavalry. Col. HALL sent word he could hold his own until reinforcements could arrive. Col. WILDER went to his aid with amounted infantry force.

At last reports quite a heavy engagement was going on.

The rebels have lately been making serious demonstrations from Gen. MORGAN's position at Liberty, feeling our lines on the left.

‘Twas at the Seige of Vicksburg,
Of Vicksburg, of Vicksburg,
‘Twas at the Seige of Vicksburg,
When the Parrott shells were whistlin’ through the air!

CHORUS

Listen to the Parrott shells!
Listen to the Parrott shells!
The Parrott shells are whistlin’ through the air!
Listen to the Parrott shells!
Listen to the Parrott shells!
The Parrott shells are whistlin’ through the air!

Oh, well will we remember
Remember, remember,
Tough mule meat, June sans November,
And the minie-balls that whistled through the air!

CHORUS

Listen to the minie-balls!
Listen to the minie-balls!
The minie-balls are singing in the air!
Listen to the minie-balls!
Listen to the minie-balls!
The minie-balls are singing in the air!
