That could be a sign of how Mr Trump's presidential rivals handle a possible arrest and criminal trial for falsifying business records and state campaign finance law violations.
But even oblique attacks risk attracting Mr Trump's attention - and ire. And it wasn't long before the former president fired back at Mr DeSantis.
"Ron will probably find out about this sometime in the future when he's unfairly and illegally attacked by a woman (or possibly a man!) with false accusations," he posted on his social media site, Truth Social. Mr Trump later deleted the post and replaced it with a lengthier response. His campaign team also sent out a press release criticising what they painted as a tepid response from the governor.
Mr DeSantis had been under pressure from Trump supporters to defend the former president and denounce the prosecution ever since Mr Trump speculated on Truth Social that he would be arrested on Tuesday.
"Pay attention to which Republicans spoke out against this corrupt BS immediately and who sat on their hands and waited to see which way the wind was blowing," Mr Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr, tweeted on Sunday.

DeSantis response was so transparent. Look like you’re defending the president by attacking Soros plant, thereby pleasing the base, but making sure you get a couple of thinly disguised swipes in with the porn star/hush money remarks, thereby pleasing the WAFIA (Washington mafia) bosses and donors.
He didn’t pull it off very well - he looked like even more of a weasel than I already thought, and the MAGA base ain’t buying what he’s selling....not the smart ones, anyway.
Was it okay when Trump accused DeSantis of fooling around with underage girls and his supporters filed an ethics complaint against DeSantis

DeSantis looked like he had spent the 3 days since news broke consulting with handlers. i’m done with pols who defer to handlers.
To a surprising degree, a lot of politicians are like that, being cold fish lacking personal rapport with others. A gregarious wife can help remedy that defect, but professional handlers are often needed for the heavy lifting of major public events and political strategy. And every now and then, the struggle to pose in public as a decent sort goes wrong.
Just so long as it’s okay for one side to take cheap shots then it’s okay for both sides to do it ??
Personally I wish both would stop cheap shots against each other and aim them at democrats

Agree to a degree. This situation, which involves likely arresting a Pres. and is political persecution and election interference, is very different than everyday campaigning with political cheap shots. This is for the whole enchilada. RDS’s cheap shots show he would rather take out a political opponent than save our country.
Vivek Ramaswamy set the standard, which none of the other Republican contenders will match. It was a full-throated condemnation of the Manhattan tyrant.
All that GOPe carefully cultivated image by DeS as the non-Trump, now gone forever. Shows how controlled DeS is. And DeS did it in the most weaselly way.
Agreed partially, arresting a former President is ridiculous especially over paying a porn star, but Trump is the king of taking cheap shots, a lot of people here in FR said it was dumb for Trump to be attacking DeSantis and it’s no surprise when DeSantis hits back
It’s stupid for both sides to act petty instead of attacking Biden over the economy, Ukraine and many other things
I am gradually becoming a fan of this style. It's like making sausage (in that we don't want to see it being made) except our nations leadership is more important and we need to see the interior of the process.
That’s the problem with DeSantis in a nutshell. He’s a lawyer who has made a career in politics … which means he’s a managed, manicured phony.
Trump has done every bit of that and more.
