Most of us simpletons have to settle for a glass of water after a workout. But, the lucky people of Germany’s Black Forest get to reward themselves with locally-made schnapps.
Nestled along its nine-mile loop through the Black Forest, the hiking route Oberkircher Brennersteig offers little schnapps fountains to thirsty hikers. They are tubs filled to the brim with bottles of schnapps in icy cold water to keep them cool. An adorable little ‘honesty box’ on the side asks for the visitors to pop some money in before they enjoy a delicious shot or two. There are even trays for clean and dirty shot glasses to keep it hygienic and organised.
The circular trail takes strollers through orchards, vineyards, farms, and distilleries (locally known as brennereis). And, given the fact that the Black Forest is a fruit haven, the little schnapps fountains feel very appropriate.
Schnapps, an alcoholic drink made from distilled fruit brandies, herbal liqueurs, infusions and more, is known as Germany’s drink of choice. It is packed with fruits like pears, cherries, apples and plums.

They should try that in Kentucky, only with mint juleps.
Sure, what could go wrong there?
If it works, they could put them on the Autobahn, and we could put a few on Mount Washington where people die of exposure every year.
At least they’ll go out with a smile.

That’s why they drink it - it’s good for you! (Except for the toxin)
Boy these Krauts think of everything.

Don’t they give Brandy to frozen skiers?
America used to have little things that reflected the honesty of our people.
There was a story from around 1970 about someone who kept money in a mounted box on a road of the community and how over the years sometimes the money ran low and sometimes it was more than the couple of hundred that started it, but when the story broke the money had been there for whoever needed it, for many years, people would dip in, people would pay it back, but it was completely self-maintained.
I’ve been told that if you dropped your wallet in Tokyo it would still be there with all the money in it.
This sounds like my kind of hike. I imagine it might go a bit weavy and zig-zaggy towards the end.
“Not exactly my idea of a thirst quencher.”
Right. But it is just the thing on a cold winter day.
Ah ha — you're right. Now that makes sense!
They seem to have a gift for design and engineering.
They had monorails back in the 50’s
We used to hike up the hill into the forest. Lots of wildlife.
Regularly encountered deer.
The people were friendly.
They certainly had a knack for snappy looking military uniforms.
Prost! (*hiccup*).
Volksmarches are a German tradition.
Pay a fee for entrance and get handed a beer glass usually donated by the sponsoring brewery. Talk a walk through the forest and every few kilometers you can get a refill (free) and a bratwurst if you want to pay.
I hope to be able to visit Bavaria again during a volksfest in a small town and do that again.
Nowadays some of those farm stands are taking Venmo as well.

I believe that. I'm in Japan for work quite often and we joke that if you left your suitcase on the sidewalk and came back an hour later it would still be there but your clothes will have been washed and pressed.
The Japanese have honor, which is a concept that's all but lost in the western world today. They want to be able to look at themselves in the mirror and know that they acted in a manner that they can be proud of.
