Most folks I know are happy with Kaiser. It's available only in 8 states + D.C.

Wash/Ore/Cal/Col/Md/Hi/Va. Then there's Georgia, a purple state. The biggest provider seems to like liberal states. Anything to it?

Florida is calling. Lotta old folks down there. They must be ok with what they have, whatever it is. Would anyone confine their retirement to kaiser available states?

When I lived in California I often heard people refer to it as “Killer Kaiser”. Michael Savage would sometimes devote a segment of his radio show to reports of Kaiser mess ups.

Companies that receive the World’s Most Ethical Company designation work to improve their communities. They also foster and grow empowered employees while modeling a workplace where ethics and a strong sense of purpose lead the way.

I would think more of it if was as an award for their actual MISSION.

Kaiser Foundation brought HMOs to the US through their relentless lobbying efforts.

You know the Health Maintenance Act of 1974 was horrible just by the fact that it was bipartisan. Nixon and Ted Kennedy pushed hard to get it passed.

Why did it take a federal law to make HMOs legal in the US? Because prior to the Act became law, it was illegal in every state for a doctor to accept payment for withholding treatment.

California, dominated by Kaiser, is effectively a German-style health system. The hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic facilities are owned by Kaiser and the doctors are employed by Kaiser.

This might not affect your health if you have, at worst, a chronic condition like Type 2 diabetes which is treatable with generic medications. It’s not so good if you want a new treatment or off-label usage of a drug. Want a second opinion? Sure, my colleague, also employed by Kaiser, will be happy to provide one.

I was given a choice in Virginia between Kaiser and Anthem. Several people I knew were on Kaiser and recommended it, so I tried it. Then after 1 year switched to Anthem. In short, Kaiser is great if nothing goes wrong. But I needed lower back surgery and waiting until I switched to Anthem. Kaiser’s list of approved back surgeons was limited. And my surgeon didn’t take Kaiser because he claimed they paid poorly on claims.

My husband and I had double insurance - Kaiser and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

When he was fighting cancer, we’d go to Kaiser for the MRIs, blood tests, CT and ultrasound scans - and then take the results to the (far better) Blue Cross/Blue Shield doctors at Loma Linda, City of Hope and Disney Cancer Center for diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. We felt he got the best care that way - Kaiser, of course, was loath to give us the results of the tests and we had to fight them on this, but eventually prevailed. Usually we’d have to go in person and demand hard copies of the results b/c Kaiser would take six or more months to send over the results, if at all, then hand deliver them to the non-Kaiser doctors.

The doctors outside of Kaiser kept telling us to “get away from the Kaiser doctors” - but we used them for the scans b/c otherwise we’d be charged 20% of the cost by Blue Cross.

Kaiser which goes back to WW2 if not before predates “liberal politics” in at least some of those states including California.

They are where they are because Henry J Kaiser’s shipyards and company interests were in this places. They were a pioneer in prepaid healthcare.

They are an HMO that does most things in house to provide streamlined care and cost savings. Some surgeries and testing procedures they’ll farm out. They are even creating their own medical school in the Los Angeles area.

I think people like the integration of healthcare instead of having to chase individual doctors, pharmacies, etc. Their system isn’t perfect but it’s been a good model for many.

When I lived in Los Angeles, we knew NEVER, EVER go to Kaiser. My hospital, and all my doctors, were at St. John’s in Santa Monica.

I’ve been following some health care threads on Reddit about a condition I e got. Patients with Kaiser are almost universally denied their needed treatments and having to go out of network and pay out of pocket. Based upon what I’ve read about them they seem to be horrible.

The only people I’ve ever heard talk about kaiser have been Californians.

It’s not so good if you want a new treatment or off-label usage of a drug.

Doctor shopping for HCQ isn’t likely to work at Kaiser if that’s what you’re getting at.

Kaiser is socialized medicine at its worst.

Like all socialized medicine programs worldwide, they give a little to some people and gain accolades while screwing the majority behind the scenes.

I had nothing but excellent service for Kaiser while living in California.

Moved to ID and did my best to find Kaiser providers or get coverage and could not.

Hate their politics, love their service.

Their basic business model is that they maximize profits by NOT treating people. Of course, they have to treat people to stay in business but when I worked in California, the union that I belonged to gave me a choice of three plans-- Kaiser, Ross-Loos and an indemnity plan where you paid a percentage for any doctor of your choice.

They explained the Kaiser business model. Ross-Loos operated on the same model but generated fewer complaints so, being young, healthy, naive and thrifty, I picked Ross-Loos.

Long story short, the first time that I had to use it, I drove three towns over to their nearest facility, waited my turn and got scolded for seeking treatment (a severe burn) for something I ought to be able to handle myself.

They changed the dressing and handed me an instruction sheet. At the next opportunity, I dropped them and changed to the indemnity plan. Yeah, it cost me a little more if I sought treatment, but I would be seeing somebody who welcomed the business rather than resented the intrusion.

Kaiser sucks. I have no idea why anyone would actually want them - or their own internal network. I’ve had them once for a year, will never return.

Much happier with my coverage from Regence/Blue Cross.

Not at all. Try getting Avastin for ovarian cancer.

Doctor shopping? LOL. I wouldn’t live in California if you paid me 8 figures every year.
