I don’t get the joke. I don’t eat at Applebees, but it’s just one of hundreds of cookie cutter chain restaurants in this country, all of which have identical menus.

Back in elementary school, my mother warned me that if I got into trouble, she wouldn’t allow me to come home [two blocks away] for lunch, and would have to eat in the school cafeteria.

It happened once, and to this day I remember the cafeteria lunch: split pea soup and an orange. That straightened me right out. :-)

This doesn’t hit the spot with me. Kids are the ones who beg me to take them to Applebees’. Same for Olivegarden. Otherwise you wouldn’t catch me dead in either place.

I had a college sports team coach who did something similar. A poor performance from the team would get us dinner at, say, a chain steak restaurant like Bonanza.
