Arctic climate modeling too conservative, says new research

Climate models used by the UN's IPCC and others to project climate change are not accurately reflecting what the Arctic's future will be. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg argue that the rate of warming will be much faster than projected.

Due to the Arctic´s sea ice cover and its harsh climate, relatively few observations are made in that part of world. This means that the climate models used for projecting the future of the Arctic have not been calibrated to the same extent there as in other parts of the world.

Two recent scientific studies involving researchers from the University of Gothenburg compared the results of the climate models with actual observations. They concluded that the warming of the Arctic Ocean will proceed at a much faster rate than projected by the climate models.

"These climate models underestimate the consequences of climate change. In reality, the relatively warm waters in the Arctic regions are even warmer, and closer to the sea ice. Consequently, we believe that the Arctic sea ice will melt away faster than projected," explains Céline Heuzé, climatologist at the University of Gothenburg and lead author of one of the studies.

"We need a climate model that is tailored to the Arctic. In general, you can't use the same model for the entire planet, as conditions vary considerably. A better idea would be to create a specific model for the Arctic that correctly factors in the processes occurring in the Arctic Ocean and surrounding land areas," Céline Heuzé explains.

Translation: Our current models our crap and don’t show the need to make drastic changes. Kick it up to 100 degree F for 365 days. That will show a rapid melt and get the response we want!

Climate models = GIGO

Friend of mine used to work for a phosphate mining company in Florida and one of his jobs was to submit models that would determine how much their holding ponds would hold which has a lot to do with how much they could mine.

The state environment regulatory agency set limits. He said (for example) if his model predicted the ponds would be 1” over limits he would just change the predicted rainfall for the coming year to be a *tiny* bit less and voila! suddenly the model was within state limits. Let the mining go on. LOL

Anyone who has done any work with statistical models with an astronomical number of highly flexible variables knows how little it takes to change predicted outcomes dramatically. That’s why long term climate predictions are essentially worthless....no matter what they predict. You can’t include all the variables and many of the ones you can are unpredictable themselves. So, when you plug in assumptions about variables that themselves are likely wrong the final results are garbage.

I thought the claim was the Arctic was already going to be ice free in the summer by 2013, according to their theory and models. How can there possibly still be ice there 10 years later and melting faster than predicted?

Newsflash!! After decades of thinking, feeling, and caring, the consensus of all thinking, feeling, and caring government scientists is that the Artic and Antarctic areas of the Earth are.....cold!

Thank you for referencing that article Oldeconomybuyer.

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

At the other end of global warming alarmist junk science extremism, at least down the road from Gothenburg (semi-sarc), here's an earlier thread from today (3.13.23) that points out that global warming alarmist Ms Thunberg pulled her previous tweet that world will end this year.

Too conservative? Ha.

Climate modeling isn’t science. It lacks all ability to predict the future. It is, however, successful at fleecing hardworking Americans out of their tax dollars.

It's comical to be sitting here on the coast of California as we get another Atmospheric River! over the next 2 days which undoubtedly will drop another 3-5 feet of snow in the mountains...which already have some of the highest totals ever recorded.

Not one of these moron a**holes predicted that. Not even close.

My model predicts that in 3 years the entire East Coast of the USA will be whipsawed by hurricanes on a a daily basis. I propose a grant, for $30 million, to purchase estates in Palm Beach and the Hamptons IOT test the effects of this model.
