Is It Time To Move the Capital? | Opinion

The time has come to think the unthinkable: move the capital. Crime, disorder, and an irresponsible local government are Washington's liabilities.

The Constitution sets up no barriers to moving the capital to a new location. Article I, Section 8 says only that Congress shall exercise exclusive jurisdiction over a district designated as the seat of government as ceded by particular states and not exceeding 10 square miles in area. Congress can move the capital by statute if it wishes to do so. A constitutional amendment is not required.

Wherever you moved it would soon become a corrupt festering chithole just like Foggy Bottom is.

Many years ago (too far back to search) I posted saying that DC had become a museum city and that all the marble columns and statues has gone to the heads of our politicians. They have an overly large sense of importance because of where they are, not who they are.

Get them out of DC to somewhere else. I recommended Omaha, Nebraska. It's centrally located, near Offutt Airforce Base, and away from all the rich trappings that working in DC and living in the Virginia suburbs has become.

Yes. This is an excellent plan. Not only move several departments OUT of DC....move them to small towns far far away from any big city.

This will of course cause mass resignations within those departments because the kind of lizard people who work for them will recoil in horror at the very thought of having to live amongst real Americans.

Good. Even better.

We not only get it out of DC and weaken the Swamp and remove much of the malign influence on that department, we also get to flush the toilet within those government agencies while doing so. Outstanding!

LOL....not surprising.

What? That Washington DC is the capital of the U.S. and the Capitol building is located there?

I must be missing something.

yes. move it to Lincoln nebraska, with a thousand seat congressional hall, away from the decadence that is DC. lower the number of constituents per representative by half and have more reps in congress. build housing for reps at the cost of their state and have the state legislatures pay them.

no more giving themselves and their staff raises on the taxpayers dime.

I’d love to see Congress move the boundaries of Washington DC back to include the 3 counties of Northern Virginia - Arlington, Fairfax and Louden.

That right there would instantly make Virginia a red state again.

Move the Capital to the geographic Center of the Nation.

That will quickly result in downsized government.

Moving the capitol would be an opportunity to get away from the over-built white man’s buildings and have congress meet in un-air-conditioned thatch huts with dirt floors with other creative variations as part of the mix.

Cheaper to maintain, less racist, and more inclusive.

NEVER happen.

It’s CAPIT”O”L, not Capit”a”l URINALISTS!

The ONLY way is a new Capitol, in a NEW USA.

A NEW nation comprised of Conservative states and like minded counties of other states.

I’ll bet you went to college too.

Capital vs. Capitol—What’s the Difference?

Capital can be a noun or an adjective. Capital can refer to uppercase letters, accumulated wealth, or the city that serves as the seat of a country’s or state’s government.

A capitol is a building in which the legislative body of government meets.

Move the Capital to Kiev because that is where all the money and politicians goes. Kiev is the darling of the Democrats so move it there – at least the money transfers will be a shorter distance.

“It is time to scatter the various bureaucratic departments among the various states.”

That’s a good idea, and I believe that idea has been kicked around before — but not seriously, sadly.

There are plenty of conference room hotels available throughout the country. They could all use the business. With telecommunications being the way they are they could scatter all over the country and still keep in touch.

Suggest that they use the meeting/conference rooms in Trump hotels. Then stand back and watch the meltdown. Be-YOU-ti-ful!

What Is the Capital of the US

... is a link to a Google search. That gave the same example I did.

And you are correct. 'Capitol' is not in the US Constitution text. But it is found the capital city of Washington DC.

It is definitely time to return most of the portion of the District of Columbia given by the state of Maryland to the federal government to create the District of Columbia. The portion Virginia gave to the federal government was given back to Virginia in 1846. There are many federal buildings and installations today in Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia (the Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery being the most famous). The Federal government could retain the Mall, non-residential federal buildings around the mall and the parks in the central district. The only residential building in a new, much smaller District of Columbia would be the White House.

Downsizing the federal District and returning all but the non-residential core to Maryland, solves the issue of representation in Congress used by many to justify DC statehood. It also takes Congress out of the role of administering a large city, the city government would no longer report to Congress. The federal Park Police would provide protection inside the new District still owned by the federal government. The substantial physical infrastructure associated with the capital of the nation (buildings housing the core of Congress, the Executive Branch, and the Judicial Branch) would not have to be relocated nor would the public parks and monuments. Building a new capital in western Kansas would require hundreds of billions of dollars the nation cannot afford.

Federal agencies can be spread out across the country no matter where the District of Columbia is located or how large it is. If the idea has merit, and would save costs, the disbursement of the departments and agencies can be done over time thereby spreading the cost over time.
