After a Botched EV Push, General Motors Is in Deep Trouble
Auto Evolution ^ | 3/10/23 | Christian Agatie

I once believed that GM had everything needed for a successful EV program. The Detroit carmaker invested billions in overhauling its factories and building new ones. Its EV plans looked rock solid, with more than a dozen EV models planned, some in the mass-market segments. GM even started partnerships with battery makers and raw material suppliers to ensure it has everything in place for a successful execution of its EV plan.

I smiled when Mary Barra vowed to surpass Tesla by 2025, although I thought if anyone were to challenge the EV leader, it would be GM. With all the resources, all the money, and all the factories, GM had a shot at being an important player in the EV arena, even without selling more EVs than Tesla. GM proved me wrong despite all this, with a disappointing EV production in 2022 and no sign of improvement in 2023.

Fascism is based on central planning. Fascism differs from communism in that there is private ownership of industry, but it is heavily-regulated by central planners. In the U.S., fascists are called Democrats.

I was not aware of standing demand for so many vehicles. I don’t see a sarc tag /s.
Is that standing demand accompanied by the ability to purchase them?
If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.
I wonder how much of that standing demand is anticipated government orders for the vehicles that may never materialize by being funded?

This whole EV madness is not the result of natural market forces.

Communists don't care about market forces.

Ronaldus Magnus III :" Reminds me of the video of a Soviet Union tractor factory.
Outside the factory were rows and rows of rusting tractors.
Inside, they just kept producing more tractors. Everyone had a ‘job.’ "

Reminds me of Sterling-Homex (Avon, NY), which produced complete housing modules suitable for installing in residence and hotels.
Outside the factory were rows and rows of completed modules marked "sold" as they came off the production line.
Inside every tradesman was busily working
Barrons magazine did a story about their back dated sales, and yet they had massive inventory on site.
It turns out that the sales numbers were inflated, and the house of cards collapsed

Tesla is introducing a new high performance electric motor..using robotic assembly and thin rods of copper.....robotic welging machine welds all the copper connections in one pass...Tesla can cram in a lot more conductors into the rotor....so power and torque constant over almost the entire Rev range.

I once believed that GM had everything needed for a successful EV program.

A compact direct conversion fusion reactor would be an example of an enabling technology for electrically motivated vehicles assuming it brings no disqualifying downsides.

The scientific illiterates pushing EVs have no clue as to the difference between an energy source, energy storage and energy transport. They are the kind of morons that think all it would take to make an electric airliner would be slapping some solar panels on its wings.

Our corrupt government can force us to do a lot of things. I am in despair over everything I like being taken away.

Gasoline industry and gas stations are being wiped out. Cars that are not EV will be restricted and then banned.

How to regulate this?
Lanes for certain vehicles with monitoring already happens (car pool lane, paid tolls, bus only, using laser to read the squiggly line on license plate for your driving and other records, cars going past the monitoring devices on roadsides or on red light camera poles).

And you can bet soon that your right to drive the EV will be shut down and the computer controlled doors and engine starter will refuse to listen to your phone or key fob if they don’t like you. Banned like a credit or ATM card going dead. Let alone self-driving cars.

Is that the proposed site of a lithium mine on the edge of an extinct volcano in northern Nevada?

I thought the environmentalists shut that down.

The free market doesn’t want EVs, that’s why the govt will force you to buy them.

GM could start by firing whoever came up with the name for the Cadillac “Lyriq.”

“I once believed that GM had everything needed for a successful EV program.”

Wrong from the start-

GM had no chance to succeed at EVs.
None. Zero. Zilch. NADA.

So why should we listen to anythg else Ms Agatie has to say??

Fire the left-wing broad who runs the company.

Build 1960’s type gas powered muscle cars.

What a LUDDITE - everyone knows that everybody wants an EV...so they can spend their entire journeys hunting charging stations (that actually work), rather than looking at scenery. =

“Mary Barra vowed to surpass Tesla by 2025.” Lame. Dear Ms. Barra, why is it that you did not build cool electric cars before Tesla’s launch in 2004? And why waste all that money now? My hunch: lack of ethics and lack of foresight.

Since GM has gone “all in” on EVs, I am skeptical on their figures for EV popularity. Annnd, after years of planning and preparation, can a lack of battery production be the whole reason for their anemic EV sales?
