THE EXECUTIVE SESSION.

The Senate were in Executive Session to-day six hours, and nearly cleared the calendar of Executive nominations. There was a very warm contest over the confirmation of CASSIUS M. CLAY. It is understood that the President made a special request of his friends in the Senate to confirm him, which was accordingly done. There are not more than six or eight Major and Brigadier-Generals unconfirmed, among whom are F.P. BLAIR, W.H. WRIGHT, Col. COGGSWELL, and G. GRANGER. All the Judges for the District Court here were confirmed, except Judge WYLIE.

The Senate Military Committee have considered for several days the brevet promotions in the regular army. They were finally reported to the Senate to-day without recommendation. The probabilities are that no action will be taken on them this session. The Committee felt that the present was no time to confer brevet promotions upon officers who are not in the field, merely because they have faithfully performed their official duties.

A strong lobby of contractors and ready-made-clothing men is at work to secure the promotion of Quartermasters in New-York, Philadelphia and other points, who have favored their class.

THE NEW ALMADEN CASE.

The decision of the Supreme Court in the quicksilver case continues to excite unusual attention. It annihilates the title of the old Almaden Company, and makes that of the new company absolute and perfect. The members of the old company having derived a profit of about ten millions from working the mines, are said to be desirous of buying the stock of their adversaries to relieve themselves from liability for quicksilver had and received. ROBERT J. WALKER remarked, yesterday, with his habitual quiet, that his interest in the winning issue of the Almaden case was half a million dollars.
