Windfall tax on oil and gas industry: a perfect way to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction - Opinion
Euromaidan Press ^ | Friday, March 10, 2023 | Svitlana Romanko

Russia’s war was not only made possible by the global fossil fuel addiction; it also helped the largest oil and gas companies reap record profits in 2022. Justice may still be done: a “windfall tax” on this war profit could and should help reconstruct the damage done to Ukraine - if it doesn’t get blocked by oil and gas giant Exxon.

The five largest oil and gas companies made bank in 2022, thanks to Russia’s war on Ukraine and the resulting spike in energy prices. Exxon led the pack, with nearly $60 billion in earnings, up over 150% from last year. These blockbuster profits are being raked in even as families across Ukraine and Europe have to make tough choices about buying food or heating their homes through the winter and as American households struggle to pay their bills.

It is war profiteering, plain and simple. Fossil fuels are weapons of mass destruction, whether wielded by a petro-state dictator or by a wealthy CEO of fossil fuel giants.

Ukraine has not told its people, that Joe Biden’s raising the cost of energy on his first day in office 2021 - in order to force *Americans* away from fossil fuels - helped the Moscow Club energy pogrom. That Joe Biden set off a chain-reaction of price increases for all goods and services, an inflationary spiral.

When, the cost of energy must be lowered by expanding the availability of fuel; and, that works against the Moscow Club.

So that C-17’s can deliver armor, when sea surface routes are frustrated by Chinese and Russian navies. And, so that fossil-fuel-powered-vehicles can operate - given that Electrical Vehicles (EV) are very limited to specific, protected environments upon which they can operate.

I doubt that there are any TESLA’s running the gauntlets in to and out from Bakhmut.

With little to no CapEx, oil companies are going to have greater profits. What company would spend money for the future when the government tells them there is no future.

If Russia wins, U.S. taxpayers don’t love a dime. If Ukraine wins, we’ll be bilked for billions.

Well said.

Joe and the Democrats are trying to break the system. They want the country to look like California. And while they're at it, they'll take any profits that happen to occur as a side effect.

Current theory, is, that the author, Svitlana, must be reading the same faxes as Adam Kinzinger.

“Windfall tax on oil and gas industry: a perfect way to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction”

I believe that’s under consideration in Moscow.

A Marshal Plan to rebuild a defeated Ukraine?

This would force the entire world (except for Russia and China) to flush money away to the Ukraine oligarchs.

We know the “poor” countries will be given exceptions by the UN, leaving the USA to pay for most of it, again and again till infinity and beyond.

Let’s have a “windfall tax” on Hollywood salaries, television, and movies. They want to back a crime syndicate in Ukraine, let them pay for it.

Was that supposed to say: If Russia wins, U.S. taxpayers don’t lose a dime? Because it doesn't make sense to me otherwise.
