I mean, who actually thinks it’s a good idea, or worth it, to drive over a thousand miles and over a border to a place where the reputation for medical care is that you are more likely to lose a kidney than to get a quality procedure? Fishy

It is truly disgusting. I scanned several links last night, and USA media was repeating the LIE that USA authorities found “no notable criminal history”.
And now there’s more: a female fifth passenger did not cross the border with them. She reported to police in the US when her friends did not return, said that they use drugs:

PS another board I visit to discuss crime has taken down the whole thread on this story. They are annoyingly liberal leaning, mostly white females, and the unfolding story simply isn’t jiving with their preferred narrative of black victimhood/sainthood.

One new question - if all four Americans had drug related USA rap sheets, how did they get by USA and Mexican border checks in their van?

But, Central American gangs are the most violent gangs in the entire world. Bringing cash or the promise of cash onto their territory was a huge risk.

The way arrests of parents used to be made in Florida was, every Friday all the Sheriffs sent out deputies with an arrest list. When a parent was arrested, they’d sit them down with a telephone and the arrestee would call friends or family until they had someone to take care of the kids. Now, they have the Department of Children and Families. Unfortunately, from what I’ve gleaned off coworkers who had family arrested, the kids are much more likely to be abused or beaten by the other kids at someone’s home. As for committing crimes with kids in the car or house, it is now and has always been common. The kids are viewed as annoying furniture.

Cops also used to carry a 38 and a shotgun in the car. Now it’s body armour, combat clothing and a fully auto 556 or 762 in the car. We are a long ways from caring police work of the past.
My theory is this.
Drug mules needed a woman with a plausible excuse to cross the border. That excuse was the tummy tuck. I am also willing to bet that she was actually scheduled for the procedure. She has the procedure, while the other two or three obtain the drugs. Go back to the border, and she has a doctors excuse for why they were in Mexico in hand.
If you really wanted a cheap plastic surgery done in Mexico, fly to Mexico City ( which would have the more talented surgeons) with your girlfriend. Why in the world would you spend more money ( via gas costs) ,and recover post op in a car driving hundreds of miles, versus just coming back on a three or so hour plane flight.
I bet you they were recruited by someone in a cartel, and the opposing cartel got wind that they were crossing the border. Hence, the shootout .

The first report about them that I read said they were in Mexico for plastic surgery (tummy?) which I found hard to believe.

They were probably trying to buy drugs wholesale for resale and cut out middle man. Middle man took umbrage.
