When we were teens, we used to vault the “safety fence” atop a local Oregon tourist stop, and go scampering down the steep trail to the beach. The appeal of many of our favorite places was that nobody would go there looking for us.
I lived in Newport, OR for a few years. Right on a cliff above the ocean. The beaches in OR are a true thing of stunning natural beauty, but you sure had to be aware of weather, waves, wind, animals. I saw giant snags (dead trees) get picked up by 110 mph winds and go through a hotel window. Poor guy...you have to respect your surroundings.
