A new study suggests that a "keto-like" diet may be associated with higher blood levels of "bad" cholesterol and a twofold heightened risk of cardiovascular events such as chest pain (angina), blocked arteries requiring stenting, heart attacks and strokes.
Proponents of a ketogenic diet suggest limiting carbohydrates to 10% of total daily calories, protein to 20% to 30% and obtaining 60% to 80% of daily calories from fat.
Some previous studies have shown that an LCHF diet can lead to elevated levels of LDL cholesterol in some people.
Iatan and her colleagues defined an LCHF diet as consisting of no more than 25% of total daily energy or calories from carbohydrates and more than 45% of total daily calories from fat. They dubbed this an LCHF diet and "keto-like."
The research team analyzed data from the UK Biobank.
Compared with participants on a standard diet, those on an LCHF diet had significantly higher levels of both LDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B (apoB), the protein component that sits on LDL and other atherogenic lipoprotein particles. After an average of 11.8 years of follow-up, people on an LCHF diet had more than two-times higher risk of having several major cardiovascular events, such as blockages in the arteries that needed to be opened with stenting procedures, heart attack, stroke and peripheral arterial disease. In all, 9.8% of participants on an LCHF diet experienced a new cardiac event, compared with 4.3% of those on a standard diet, a doubling of risk for those on an LCHF diet.
"On average, cholesterol levels tend to rise on this diet, but some people's cholesterol concentrations can stay the same or go down, depending on several underlying factors," Iatan said. "There are inter-individual differences in how people respond to this dietary pattern that we don't fully understand yet."

A balanced diet is the only healthy diet.
Axiomatic.
Everything else gives you short term gain, often unsustainable, and long term frailty.
Yes eat whatever you want, as long as you don’t mind suffering dementia, strokes, going blind, losing your limbs, from diabetes.
Losing your life is by far not the worst thing that can happen to you.
“May” be “linked” to .. could they add “possibly” too just to make it even more wishy washy
People doing keto don’t store a normal amount of potassium. They have kidney problems. The body stores sugar and potassium together. Without sugar, the body can’t store potassium.
A part of weight loss of people doing keto is reduction of water and potassium.
Your diet actually sounds like the “get weak and crappy inside in all the places you cant see” diet. 50% carbs is NUTS. Your body never has a chance to burn anything but carbs, and if you dont burn all of them, they turn into fat. Carbs are the worst possible fuel for your body.
Pass the potatoes
I think it depends upon what is and is not included in the balanced diet.
I also do 16:8 fasting, so I know I am burning through all my carbs and glycogen stores in my liver on a daily basis.
What I usually say when someone in person starts talking to me about their low carb diet vs my diet, is “look at me, look at you”. That usually shuts them right up.
Your last sentence in this message is ridiculous. Carbs are a great fuel for the body. Serious weightlifting can be greatly impacted negatively over time by lack of carbs. I definitely don’t recommend you go into a career as a trainer for weight lifters.
There are many reasons sugar is beneficial. It’s always in the blood. The body has to keep it to a certain level. It it’s low, the body converts protein to sugar.
People don’t eat when they sleep. If they don’t have a lot of stored sugar, the body uses vitamins and I think sugar to create hormones that will convert proteins in the muscles to sugar.
The body stores water and potassium with sugar. To have an optimum amount of potassium and water one has to consume sweets until feeling satiated.
Sugar increases magnesium absorption and makes it easy to have a good level.
The body uses sugar to make hormones.
