In pursuance of a call issued by His Honor Mayor OPDYKE and other prominent men of the City, an Immense meeting of loyal citizens was held last night at Cooper Institute, embracing some four thousand of our loyal citizens who are in favor of sustaining the Government in its efforts to suppress the rebellion, who are faithful to the Union and the Constitution, determined to preserve the integrity of the national laws and national territory and to maintain the power of our flag.

The hour appointed for the gathering was 8 o'clock P.M., but by 7 o'clock the great hall of the Institute was so thoroughly crowded that it became necessary to station Policemen at the doors to prevent even further attempts on the part of thousands present to obtain admission. The platform was patriotically decorated with the American bunting, and the desk for the speakers was appropriately draped with the same beautiful emblem. Perfect order and decorum was kept, though impatience for the commencement of the evening's work induced the frequent calls for "BUTLER," "BRADY," and other favorites with the people.

At about fifteen minutes to eight, Gen. WETMORE descried the venerable Gen. SWIFT in the audience, and insisted upon his getting upon the platfom, when the audience gave the old hero three rousing cheers, and Gen. WETMORE, ever ready upon an emergency, taking the veteran by the arm, advanced to the front of the platform and said:

FELLOW-CITIZENS: You do well to cheer this veteran soldier, and will again do so when I tell you that he is our friend Gen. SWIFT who fought for his country over fifty years ago, and who is here to-night to testify by his presence his devotion to the dear old flag,
