As the University of Idaho community reels from the shocking slayings of four undergrad students in an off-campus rental home in Moscow, Idaho, this past November, school officials have already announced plans to tear the building down.

“The owner of the King Street house offered to give the house to the university, which we accepted,” University of Idaho President Scott Green said last week. “The house will be demolished. This is a healing step and removes the physical structure where the crime that shook our community was committed.”

Landlords almost always seek an address change in similar situations.

But communities and homeowners deal with such tragedies in different ways. Here are the stories of several houses of horror that met different fates over the years

In a small rural town in Maryland (pop 2,000) there was a wife who killed her abusive husband and buried him in the garden. My friend bought that house at half off market value. People are just superstitious. New carpet, a little paint and an exorcism, it’s called restoration.

An old college roommate (& long time NFL’er actually) grew up nearby and said they used to drink beers on the front lawn in HS. The prevailing view was to laugh at the book and the stories.

I always thought it was a cool looking house, but do you want to live in a house w/ that history? There was a murder down the street here a few years ago. Crazed granddaughter killed her grandmother. Place was sold and a new owner moved in the next year. Is that any different?

I don’t know.

One of our rentals was the scene of a crime - a wife had her brother come to the house to kill the husband and make it look like an “accident.” It didn’t work and the husband thankfully survived.

We were contacted by one of the true crime shows a few years ago (the house was vacant at the time) - which asked if they could use our rental to re-enact the crime scene. My mother immediately said “NO” - so they called my brother (without my mother knowing) - and he told them “YES” - I was probably next on the list.

They filmed the segment in the house - we got a real kick out of see the floors my father had installed himself.

House is in a nice area and the husband wasn’t killed - so we moved on and the house is rented out to this day.
