Plant-based low-carbohydrate diet linked with lower risk of premature death for people with type 2 diabetes
Medical Xpress / Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health / Diabetes Care ^ | Feb. 28, 2023 | Yang Hu et al

Following a low-carbohydrate diet comprised primarily of plant-based foods was significantly associated with lower risk of premature death among people with type 2 diabetes, according to a new study. It is the first prospective cohort study to examine the relationship between low-carbohydrate diet patterns and mortality among people with diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

"While avoiding refined and highly-processed carbohydrates has been widely recommended to lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, our study provides the first empirical evidence on how low-carb diets can help manage the progression of existing diabetes," said Yang Hu.

The researchers analyzed 34 years of health data from 7,224 women participating in the Nurses' Health Study and 2,877 men participating in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, all of whom developed type 2 diabetes after those studies began. The participants completed questionnaires on lifestyle and medical history every other year, allowing the researchers to assess the compositions of their diets and score them according to intake of animal proteins and fats, vegetable proteins and fats, high-quality carbohydrates, and low-quality carbohydrates.

The findings showed a 24% reduction in all-cause mortality among those adhering to a low-carbohydrate dietary pattern. The health benefits were stronger for low-carbohydrate diets that emphasized plant-based foods and high-quality carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Those diets were also associated with a lower cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality. Low-carbohydrate diets that emphasized animal products and low-quality carbohydrates, such as potatoes, added sugars, and refined grains, were not significantly associated with lower mortality.

Low carb is more helpful with more quality low carb veggies.

Note that this was not a Keto diet.

You cannot get the amino acids and proteins you need from just plants.

You don’t have to eat a lot of meat, but definitely wild-caught salmon should be good if you don’t want to eat beef.

I’ve surmised it’s not always what you eat, it’s how much of it you eat. Portions!
And possibly, the time they’re eaten, for T2s.

Mother-in-law’s staples for the clan.....
Potato, gravy, beans, and desert after each meal.
Hard for a wife getting a controlled T2 to brake
bad habits for their own good.

Of course low carb is the way to go with diabetes.

Why load up with carbs and put on weight, which exacerbates the diabetes, and then take extra insulin to balance out the carbs?

The thing is - when people think “plant based” they think carrots, peas, corn and potatoes which are all STARCHES aka CARBS and this is why you see a lot of vegetarians who are t2 diabetic as well (and overweight)

Broccoli and Brussels sprouts are good - but you can’t get the necessary protein, let alone energy from them.

Where are you to get the proteins that are so needed? I agree with the low-carbs but low proteins is a no-no. Diabetic patients would starve on such a diet!

Too many people associate diabetics with being overweight and just need to lose weight. That’s not always true.

- - - - - - -

That’s easy to refute. There are people who eat only vegetables and are alive.

Beans have protein.

There were experiments of people eating potatoes and nothing else for several months. In some of them, the people had good levels of energy and even participated in sports.

Cows eat grass.
Therefore... they are plant based.

OK, so I could live longer by eating a plant-based diet. But why would I want to?

One of the benefits is that one doesn’t consume a big amount of iron. People can get the same benefit by removing excess iron from the body.

So let’s just say now plants are the only food everybody can eat, there’s no more meat.

Where are they going to find all this extra land to grow more of these plants?

Carnivore diet for me.

I've done Carnivore before and it worked extremely well. I lost 40 lbs in 3 months and reduced my GERD to almost nothing. Of course, I fell off the wagon so now need to restart the diet.

“Note that this was not a Keto diet.”

True, pushing the meat-based Keto diet will get one ‘un-personed’, due to its impact on ‘climate change’. But even so, getting the word out about staying clear of carbs for diabetics still accomplishes a lot, as people can then start putting 2 and 2 together.

They won’t die from diabetes but will die from something else.
