IMPORTANT FROM NEW-ORLEANS: The Harriet Lane Still in Galveston; The Rebels Converting her into an Iron-Clad (3/4/1863)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 3/4/1863

The steamer Che Kiang, from New-Orleans on the 23d, Ship Island on the 24th, and Pensacola on the 25th ultimo, arrived here yesterday morning.

She brings two hundred discharged soldiers.

The following is her report: Passed Key West on the 27th ultimo, and saw a large white steamer going in. On the same night passed the steamer Illinois, bound to New-York.

The steamers Bio Bio and Philadelphia left for New-York on the 22d ult. The former arrived at this port last evening, via Havana.

There is no doubt that the Harriet Lane is still shut in at Galveston. She has been taken up one of the rivers, and the rebels are, it is believed, converting her into an iron-clad steamer.

A rebel deserter reports that Gen. SIBLEY has sent his infantry 1,500 strong, to Shreveport, and has gone up with the balance of his command, consisting of artillery and cavalry, to Atchafalaya River.

The infantry were entirely destitute of ammunition. The conscription of all men between the ages of 16 and 60 was being enforced with relentless vigor.

The Federal gunboat Essex had picked up four torpedocs near Port Hudson, each one of them containing 200 pounds of powder.

The rebels made an attempt to capture the steamer Laurel Hill, which was unsuccessful. She was loaded with a cargo of cotton, sugar and molasses, obtained above Baton Rouge. She ventured too near Port Hudson, and the rebels placed two batteries of artillery below her. The Essex went to her assistance and the rebels skedaddled without firing a shot.

A rumor from Jackson, Miss., says that a Jew has been arrested on the charge of offering to spike the guns at Port Hudson for $60,000.

About five hundred rebel prisoners, including Gen. CLARKE, were sent to the rebel lines
