Banana Cream Pie Ping!................Soupy Sales may or may not have said it. “ my girlfriend can’t make apple pie but she sure can make my banana cream”. Whatever that means.
This is my hands-down favorite pie - I prefer a cream topping, not meringue, which I find too sticky.
A few years ago I brought a banana cream pie and chocolate cream pie for Christmas dinner - instead of the usual pumpkin, mince and apple pies my family usually has - by Christmas I was sick of all of them.
Guess which pies went first, down to scraping out the pie plates? (chocolate then banana). I couldn’t find my good glass pie baking dish when I wanted to leave - turns out my nephew had taken it in the TV room and was licking out the bottom of the plate.
Think I’ll do this again this year...

My late grandfather adored banana cream pie. He and my father were returning by rail from visiting relative a long way away. Before they left, they were offered a none-too-fresh banana cream pie.
My father took a bite and decided that it was spoiled. But my grandfather said, “more for me”, and preceded to eat the entire pie.
It hit him on the train, and he spent the better part of three hours in the train’s restroom, spoiled banana cream pie and everything else he had eaten during that holiday coming out both ends.
He was not as big a fan of banana cream pie after that.
