I have no idea if he was sick or not. I’ll find that out later. I just got back from the FIRST funeral; they’ll probably bury him in a few minutes. I’m skipping that. Then, tonight, there will probably be another service and in three days there will probably be a THIRD service, not counting the gravesite service.
He is a Christian. However, he left one wife here, two in an interior village, and two young boys. (Pak Yunus Pak = Mister) Yup, I just glanced out my window and the procession is forming in the road.
There are no such things as funeral homes here. You are buried from your home. Also, many, many times, no time is wasted between death and burial. It is just too hot and bodies stink. I’ve kept my dog inside most of the day. He would bark at the mourners. I’ve also arranged for my boys to go with hubby back to the school so they can play, and not be crass, and stay away from the obsequies. These boys can be a bit irreverent.

According to my boys, the man had been sick and the way they described it made me think of some sort of abdominal tumor. But, I didn’t inquire. But, everything was hunky dory when the day started. Sometime around 0830 - 0900, the wailing and lamenting began. This is very typical for people here. That has been going on all day. It is now 2240 and they are still loudly crying.
Funerals are normally held immediately because the decay is quite rapid and bodies stink a lot. Only in the last 20 years or so have people delayed burial for two or three days. In those cases, it is to give people from out-of-town time to get to the services.
That isn’t to say that services aren’t held in the interim. Oh, my goodness. That preacher will earn his salary this week!
Shortly after lunch, I grabbed all the money I had with me and went next door, still wearing my usual jeans and tee shirt. I had intended to make a gift to help with the expenses and then find out when the services were. As soon as I entered the yard, all the people began making a “wah, wah, wah,” sound in the back of their throats. I’ve learned that means, “Guest is here.” Or, it might mean, “thank you.” I’m not sure. They kept it up while I greeted the people in charge.
At that time the preacher and another preacher who was the musician showed up and I was informed the service would begin immediately. I let the hosts know I would return just as soon as I changed clothes.
I have been taught since youth to keep a nice, black dress and accessories at the ready to change into at a moment’s notice. That is one teaching of my mother that I adhere to. Although I was way overdressed compared to my neighbors, they also know that I dress for occasions. So, one went the black stockings, faux pearly earrings, and my funeral outfit. Two and a half hours later, it all went back in my traveling bag ready for the next sad event.
Our rains at this time of year last about two or three hours, vary in intensity and keep us cold and dreary with the cloudiness. I am ready for two clear days in a row and for the rain to happen only in the wee smalls like it should.
