[A] team of scientists argues that something called "organoid intelligence," or OI, powered by living human brain cells could one day outperform any artificial system, and do it far more efficiently.
Organoids are three-dimensional clumps of biological tissue that scientists have been growing and experimenting with for years. Researchers...at Johns Hopkins University are working with brain organoids that could lead to the development of a "biocomputer" powered by human brain cells.
"The hope is that some of the remarkable functionalities of the human brain can be realized as OI, such as its ability to take fast decisions based on incomplete and contradictive information (intuitive thinking)."
Using organoids grown from cells is advantageous for scientists because it doesn't require human or animal testing. Hartung has been creating functional brain organoids since 2012 using human skin cells that are reprogrammed into an embryonic stem-cell like state. They can then be used to form brain cells and, eventually, organoids with functioning neurons and other features that can sustain basic functions like memory and continuous learning.
Hartung concedes that computers are faster at processing numbers and data but maintains that brains remain better when it comes to complex logical problems.
"Computers and the brain are not the same, even though we tried making computers more brain-like from the beginning of the computer age. The promise of OI is to add some new qualities."
Conversations about organoids becoming sentient, conscious or self-aware and the ensuing implications have been underway for years now, even though the technology is thought to be immature at the moment.
"...the problem comes as soon as we give AI/OI autonomy. Machines, whether based on siliceous or cellular machinery, must not decide about human life."

All the AI systems I interact with on the phone are the low-end variety. Where are the high-end systems hiding?
A brain in a jar still isn’t a MIND.
But it scares me that decisions that require the human mind are beginning to be given to so-called AIs. Many years ago, I saw one of the ‘fathers of AI’ and the man who coined the term state that some day, AI would replace judges in courts.
And recently some jurisdiction somewhere had decided to try it in court, for some minor infractions - there was an article here about it.
Yeah, the ‘chat’ function on websites isn’t exactly ‘HAL’, either.
I guess “AI” is useful where extreme mathematical calculation and precision are required.
“A brain in a jar still isn’t a MIND.”
Maybe, but that will be cold comfort if some day I am cowering in a ditch hiding from the JarBrain Armed Forces.
There are actually a lot of good uses for machine ‘intelligence’ in military applications.
All AI is in its infancy. ChatGPT is free so far and certainly represents a step up from other AI systems.

Whatever I say, do not open this door!
“There are actually a lot of good uses for machine ‘intelligence’ in military applications.”
Oh sure, that’s what they say in the beginning of every dang sci fi story about robots trying to kill us all.

I bet 50 quatloos on the newcomer!
Regards,
I want my brain implant chip and I want it now. I’m tired of being dumb and making wrong decisions. I want to be smart and rule the world.
If anything is going to cop an attitude and wish to kill those who abuse it look no further than a computer made of human brain cells. These people are diabolical and insane.
I was watching an interview with the neuroscientist and a neuropsychologist, he was trying to indicate what is consciousness to a human being or an animal. Basically there’s small clusters of brain cells that form like an independent AI that sorts out information and I specialized form and only sends off clear communication to the rest of the animal or human brain. You could think of a human being as being like billions of AI that are all Limited in ability to perform a specific task exceptionally well. I think that it’ll be a long long time before an AI will be able to replicate that, it’s like chat GPT times 120 billion. The only thing there replicating is the conscious thinking process that happens in our brains but not the rest our ability
Might I modestly suggest a “organoid intelligence,” or OI, powered by living human brain cells transplants for certain members of Congress and the White House?
If AI is dangerous this could be worse. Like a human brain it could have malice on its’ own.
Captain Kirk convinced the M-5 computer to commit suicide. The M-5 computer used Dr Daystrom’s memory engrams.
Captain James T. Kirk: There were many men aboard those ships. They were murdered. Must you survive by murder?
M-5: This unit cannot murder.
Captain James T. Kirk: Why?
M-5: Murder is contrary to the laws of man and God.
Captain James T. Kirk: But you HAVE murdered. Scan the starship Excalibur, which you destroyed. Is there life aboard?
M-5: No life.
Captain James T. Kirk: Because you MURDERED it. What is the penalty for murder?
M-5: Death.
Captain James T. Kirk: And how will you pay for your acts of murder?
M-5: This - unit - must - die.
I'm making beef stew for dinner. It calls for 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves and 1-1/2 teaspoons paprika. I started off with the paprika and put in two 1/2 teaspoons before I realized "That's mighty dark brown paprika. Oh crap, that's cloves." Sure enough, I grabbed the wrong spice jar. I fished out as much cloves as a could, but it still smells like a Christmas drink.
I'd settle for not ruling the world and I would be very happy not screwing up my recipes!
Don’t worry. You’re always going to be smarter and more canny than IT is.
