That’s a long time to keep a US senator out of sight.
And I know “rules are rules” but if he is hidden successfully until Aug 19 and THEN they announce that he’s brain dead but no special election is justified ... I would expect a special election would still be called and people who say “you can’t do that” should be shut up with extreme prejudice by mobs with pitchforks and torches.

They do not have special elections for senators. The governor appoints a replacement. Then they may have election in 2024 to elect a new one. The stuff is a rumor.

I believe the law is that if someone is replaced in the Senate, the new Senator would have to stand for election in the next scheduled election, which in this case would be in 11/24.
