I Lost 300 Pounds Thanks to This Cutting-Edge New Procedure
New York Post ^ | February 22, 2023 | Alex Mitchell

Dr. David Buchin of Long Island Obesity Surgery helped Charles Gonzalez lose nearly 300 pounds. Now, the surgeon is shopping for a new wardrobe for Gonzalez so the 30-year-old can look sharp as he socializes more.

The 30-year-old based in Huntington Station, NY, has struggled with weight his entire life. In 2018, he crossed the 500-pound threshold. He was living on a diet of “only junk, fast food and snacks” as he struggled to cope with the death of his grandparents and a failing marriage.

“When I started eating I couldn’t stop,” he told The Post. “By the time I would be done, I would think, ‘Damn I can’t believe I just killed that whole thing.'”

So does he have insurance or did the American taxpayers’ foot the bill for his lack of self control?

From the above article:

On a recent outing with a woman, he opened up about his weight loss surgery and — to Gonzalez’s shock and comfort — his date revealed she also underwent a similar procedure. The two have been enjoying spending time with each other.

(Truly a match made in heaven)

(PS...I was going to stop at "he opened up about his surgery"..I guess the staples were Made In The USA)

Comments there ask the same question I always have but never can find a satisfactory answer to:

He had to lose 100 pounds to get the surgery. If he was able to lose 100 pounds without surgery why have surgery??

Also:

Doesn’t having this radical surgery with its attendant digestive problems like inability to absorb certain nutrients shorten your life span just like severe obesity does?

Would love honest FR knowledge on these two issues.

Well, it worked for him but he also needed to lose weight on his own. Some could probably do it without the risky surgery, once you drop 100 poumds they could have confidence they can keep doing it. Some would probably also need something like this. At least it seems to have worked out. He didn’t just stay huge and get bigger. Good overall outcome.

Yeah that works great, the 40% of the country that's obese just never thought of it.

Okay, I’ll give this a shot. Probably too much info but... Five years ago, I weighed 550#. I currently weight 300#. Here’s what happens:

The first 100 pounds was child’s play: I lost it in six months. Piece o’ cake. Second hundred... Not so fast, at all. In fact, I cut my daily caloric intake to 1400 and stayed at the same weight. I just about gave up when I had to cut my calories to 1200 (!) in order to lose a half-pound a week. I felt like death warmed over and served with a side of gravy. At this point, I considered surgery. Eventually, I said “Nope. You got yourself into this mess, you can get yourself out of it.” After a LOT of sciencing stuff, and not changing a blessed thing, I lost another 100# in another year.

At this point, it’s rinse-and-repeat. I hit my stride — neither gaining or losing — for about a year, then the weight drops off again. For some people, they want that steady weight loss and it just doesn’t happen. Surgery becomes the option.

As for the detrimental effects of the surgery, I was assured over and over that there were not serious side effects. I chose not to believe them simply because the human body is a vast machinery of give and take: I was taking something from it and I wasn’t sure what it could give back.

So that’s the way I see it. Anecdotal, but so is the rest of the Internet. :) Hope this helps at least a little.

He hasn’t been struggling with anything other than poor judgement and impulse control.

Yeah that works great, the 40% of the country that's obese just never thought of it.

Of course they've thought of it. They're not doing it because consistent dieting and exercise is a pain in the ass.

Dieting and exercise "don't work" for most people because most people STOP doing it after a while.

Aside from legit medical conditions, the reason people are fat is because they've decided they'd rather not do the work.

One of the problems with people morbidly obese is they also are usually diabetic. They never feel full. There is a diabetic prescription that really helps with diabetes but it makes you feel full and has the added benefit of weight loss.
My wife had really bad diabetes and could not control it. The doctor put her on Ozympic and it really help with diabetes and she lost weight to boot. I read the other day that doctors were putting obese people on this for weight loss.
