Florida bill would ban allowing dogs to stick their heads out of car windows, declawing cats

Florida Sen. Lauren Book (D-Broward) filed a new bill intended to protect animals by making it illegal to let a dog be in a driver’s lap or stick their head out of a window in the car while driving.

Additionally, Senate Bill 932 includes provisions to make it illegal to have a dog transported “on the running board, fender, hood, or roof of a motor vehicle,” as well as in a trunk, or enclosed cargo space. Dogs may also not be transported in a car that is being towed.

On top of those restrictions, the bill would require dogs be secured in a crate appropriate for the size of the dog while in a motor vehicle on a public roadway, be restrained with a safety harness or seat belt other than a neck restraint, or be under the physical control of someone other than the driver if in a car.

Dogs transported in open truck beds for pickups must be in a dog crate that allows them to have good footing, be safe from inclement weather, protected from direct sunlight, and have good ventilation.

The crate must also allow the dog to be able to turn around normally, stand or sit, and lie down in a natural position while the crate is secured to the pickup truck.

Why the actual f((( is this an issue. Why is this a bill.

Dogs love riding with heads out.

Its not a problem.

I might be convinced to go along with the declawing ban, though.

Typical Democrat. “enclosed cargo space” such as the back of a SUV or van is abuse?

They always call these “I hate dogs” bills protection.

South Carolina has a similar bill although that one would allow the government to confiscate your pet and bill you if you get accused of “abuse”.

< i>"...making it illegal to let a dog be in a driver’s lap or stick their head out of a window in the car while driving."

It's bad enough that dogs are driving, but driving with their heads out the window? That's just crazy.

But seriously, most of this is common sense stuff that should be done without the force of law. When I take my dog in the car, I make sure she is safe and secure and not a distraction while I am driving.

I’m OK with banning the declawing of cats, but let the pooches stick their heads out the window! I love seeing a dog with a big doggy smile, eyes closed in bliss, ears flapping in the wind as he/she holds his/her head out the window.

Back off, government.

I adopted a feral cat I had the cat declawed she was ripping everything to shreds, HOWEVER she was strictly an indoor cat!! I learned that even if you adopt a feral as a very small kitten they STILL have that feral gene in them she is not a very loving pet however she is safe and sound in a home with NO CLAWS!!

I've had my dogs sticking their heads out of my car for half a century now. I have no plans to curtail that.

This is one of the things that dogs live for.

Your dog will vote the way you do. Just because.

Your cat will vote the opposite of how you vote. Just because.

I never has to declaw my cats but I knew someone who had a cat like yours. That cat would had had no chance for a home if the owner couldn’t declaw it.
At the shelter you had to tell prospective owners exactly why the animal was there. Declawing gives cats like that a chance for life.

The prohibition against cat declawing is misguided. We’ve had 12 cats over the last 43 years, up to six at a time. We had four kittens in the last family declawed at about 6 weeks. It didn’t seem to affect them at all. They romped and played rough with each other as if nothing happened. We had the mother done at the same time and she was almost a year old at the time. She was noticeably “hobbled” by her procedure for about 4 days but adapted well after that. None of them acted like they missed their claws, climbing trees was no problem until they got old and fat. One of our big boys routinely beat up a fully clawed neighbor cat. We eventually limited their outdoor time because we learned our neighborhood had foxes living only a few hundred feet from our house. Most of our loving cats lived to almost 20 years old. Cancer took a couple of them at 9 years, but none of them had longevity compromised by the declawing.
