EAST PALESTINE — The village fire department is rolling out a new community service to village and Unity Township residents.
The fire department is partnering with MyID to provide the service.
The MyID company touts itself as a “comprehensive medical ID solution that provides an easy way to access, store and manage your health information.”
How it works is the company sells a variety of products like bracelets, tags, stickers and wallet cards that feature a QR code that can be scanned by medical personnel to get access to your online medical profile in a few short seconds.
Creating your own medical profile is free and the profile can be linked to as many MyID products as you like.
Mayor Trent Conaway said the idea to use the service was presented by fire Chief Keith Drabick.
Drabick is familiar with the company, having used it at a fire department in Horry County, S.C. when he lived there.
“I think it’s a very good system,” Conaway said. “We have a lot of elderly people in our community and I think it would be very beneficial to our EMS responders that they can quickly pull all of the pertinent information up.”
For example, if someone falls or has another kind of emergency that renders them unconscious or incapable of communicating first responders can simply scan the QR code instead.
Conaway said the fire department is in the process of soliciting donations from different civic organizations in town to offer the products to residents.
However, people are also encouraged to purchase their own, and can do so by going to the company website, www.get MyID.com.
Conaway said the fire department is also looking into implementing a paramedic in the community program in the future.
He said that under the program paramedics would go out into the community and do things like assist the elderly with medicines, resulting in fewer EMS calls.
