If I understand, it was just two companies of California volunteers that marched southeast from El Paso and captured two small forts, Quitman 100 miles and Davis 200 miles southeast from El Paso.
Two Union companies in two small forts in a state of 269,000 mostly empty square miles is not such a big deal, I'd think.
