It wouldn’t take much to harden a clerk’s station against attack. And it can be done in a way that’s unobtrusive. Given all that’s going on these days, I don’t know why it’s not done everywhere.
Side story: I sometimes stop at a convenience store that’s in a rather sketchy area. The clerk stands behind a simple counter. If I was so inclined, I could just take two steps, then attack her. But a simple door between her station and the rest of the store would prevent it.
