What’s the Roman number for the US debt?
Not true! My banana trees are doing quite well with no interference from humans.
“Zero is the only number that cannot be represented by Roman numerals.”
I saw DeGrasse speak to this. He said we went from 1BC to 1AD because there was no “0” with Roman numerals.
It’s a 12 letter string starting with “MOTHER...”
And you can’t kill the damned things!................
A mixed bag on these. Bananas have been artificially modified to not produce seeds, so the banana one is true. There are no elements with a J in their symbol, the moon does move farther away from the earth due to tidal friction slowing the earth’s rotation; conservation of energy and angular momentum imply that the moon must move into a higher orbit when the earth loses angular momentum.
Conversely gold does not rust, but it’s far from the only metal with that property (palladium, platinum and several others are just as inert as gold). The brain cannot regenerate lost cells, so it cannot heal itself, so the one about the teeth is false. The equator one may be true, but one percent less than what other location? Things certainly do not weigh one percent less at the equator than they do at a location one mile north of it, for example. Perhaps it meant one percent less than they weigh at the north or south side pole? (The cause of this BTW is the centrifugal force resulting from the earth’s rotation, which would be greatest at the equator and zero at the poles).
Well done!
Titanium won’t rust either. Gold isn’t the only metal that won’t rust.
OK... here’s a few responses:
>> Glass takes one million years to decompose, which means it never wears out and can be recycled an infinite amount of times!
“Decompose” is a biological process that has no meaning with respect to glass. Think of glass as an artificial rock: Rocks don’t “decompose.” They do erode. You can see from beach glass what a few short years CAN do to erode glass. On the other hand, in the right environment, it can be practically eternal.
>> Gold is the only metal that doesn’t rust, even if it’s buried in the ground for thousands of years.
“Rust” is a word that applies strictly to the oxidation of iron. What makes rust so destructive is that it creates pockets that allow moisture deeper and deeper into the metal. Other metals corrode, but often the corrosion remains impermeable, so the metal underneath the surface layer is fine. You can rub the corrosion off of copper or silver, for instance. Gold is one of the few metals that doesn’t corrode at all under normal conditions, which is one reason why it is so highly valued. (IIRC, platinum doesn’t either.)
>> Your tongue is the only muscle in your body that is attached at only one end.
Seems legit.
>>The tooth is the only part of the human body that cannot heal itself.
Seems legit.
>>Zero is the only number that cannot be represented by Roman numerals.
As far as I know, ONLY positive integers can be represented by Roman numerals. That’s an infinitely tiny portion of numbers. What’s more, large integers are pretty hard to represent in Roman numerals. AFAIK, if you want to express a trillion, you’d need a billion Ms. Good luck dealing with the federal deficit.
>>The song Auld Lang Syne is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English-speaking country in the world to bring in the new year.
I’m sure there’s at least one drunk in each country who sings this. How many sing it correctly is another matter. :-)
>> Drinking water after eating reduces the acid in your mouth by 61 percent. Drinking a glass of water before you eat may help digestion and curb appetite.
61 percent? Regardless of how much you drink? What acid? This is the sort of nonsense which inspired, “83% of internet statistics are made up.”
>>The roar that we hear when we place a seashell next to our ear is not the ocean, but rather the sound of blood surging through the veins in the ear.
I’ve always heard this since I was a kid. Wouldn’t be shocked to discover it’s a myth, but it sounds good.
Nine out of every 10 living things live in the ocean.
>>The banana cannot reproduce itself. It can be propagated only by the hand of man.
True. Bananas have been bred to be seedless. Those tiny black flecks that develop inside are not functional seeds.
>>Airports at higher altitudes require a longer airstrip due to lower air density.
Makes sense. This is a HUGE problem with trying to land on Mars.
>>The University of Alaska spans four time zones.
Does this mean that there are campuses in four time zones?
A comet’s tail always points away from the sun.
>> True. It’s particles of the comet being blasted away by the sun.
Caffeine increases the power of aspirin and other painkillers, that is why it is found in some medicines.
>> True for many types of pain. Hence, Exedrin = Caffeine + Aspirin.
If you get into the bottom of a well or a tall chimney and look up, you can see stars, even in the middle of the day.
>> Presuming you’re at an angle that doesn’t look towards the sun, this is true. If the sun’s rays can’t find a path to you at the bottom of the tunnel, you can see the stars which are normally obscured by the sunlight. Normally, reflected light shining off other objects provide enough light to prevent his, but if the well is deep enough, there won’t even be enough reflected light.
In ancient times strangers shook hands to show that they were unarmed.
>> I’ve heard this.
Strawberries and cashews are the only fruits whose seeds grow on the outside.
>> It was interesting enough to me to learn that cashews actually grow on the outside of the fruits, but I doubt that these are the only two instances. Maybe the only two commonly eaten fruits.
The moon moves about two inches away from the Earth each year.
>> Not sure of the distance, but it’s true. The moon used to appear MUCH larger in the sky, and months used to be shorter.
Due to earth’s gravity it is impossible for mountains to be higher than 15,000 meters.
>> Interesting assertion. The larger a mountain is, the more it will press into the Earth. But that would seem to be a matter of how massive it was, not how tall it was. And Mount Olympus on Mars is much higher on a much smaller planet. So I’m dubious about such a number.
I am sure that the Romans never really had a reason to consider numbers that large, but a letter with a bar over it was used to represent one thousand times the value of the letter. M is the symbol for one thousand, so an M with a bar above it would represent one million.
Like I said the Romans likely never actually did this since there would have been no good reason to actually contemplate such large values, but I would think they would understand a double bar to mean the base letter x 1000 x 1000, so an M with a double bar would be one billion. Proceeding in like fashion an M with a triple bar would be the base 1000 times 1000^3 or one trillion. Using that notation one could actually represent the debt in Roman numerals, except for the fact that by the time you actually wrote out all the letters, the debt would have increased and you’d have to start all over again!
Makes sense.

Yup!
I need closer to 20%. How high would the mountain have to be at the equator to make that happen?
The brain also cannot heal itself (although it can copy healthy parts to at least partially take over for the function of damaged parts); neurons do not regenerate. Also, I think you have it backwards on the limit to mountain height due to gravity. You would expect a taller mountain to be possible on a planet with weaker gravity. Gravity tends to pull massive objects like planets into a spherical shape. A mountain is a deviation from that spherical shape. The greater the gravitational pull, the less deviation from spherical is possible- hence taller mountains are possible on smaller planets. I have no idea if the quoted limit for mountain height is correct though.
