The drop unfolded just 71 seconds after United Airlines Flight UA 1722 took off from Kahului Airport in Maui bound for San Francisco on Dec. 18, according to data from Flight Radar, a flight tracking website. The dive was first reported by The Air Current.

The flight data shows the plane took off at 2:49 p.m. local time and rose to an altitude of 2,200 feet when it suddenly took a dive and dropped to 775 feet over the Pacific Ocean.

The plunge saw the plane dip at a vertical rate of nearly 8,600 feet per minute, according to the data.

The flight recovered and regained an altitude of 2,350 feet shortly after, the dive and recovery making up less than a minute...

Holy crap. 8600 feet per minute is crazy. There must have been a lot of people who wished they had worn their brown underwear that day.

That means the plane plunged 1,425 feet in ten seconds.

I thought that 8,600 ft/min was a typo.

The pilots got additional training

That is so reassuring…

Egads. How scary.
The plane had taken off as Hawaii was experiencing stormy weather with showers and thunderstorms rolling across the region...Maui was under flash flood warnings, high surf and gale warnings.

The flight continued on its journey and arrived in San Francisco at 9:03 p.m. local time.

"We are continuing to San Francisco. Everything is under control. Do not be alarmed."

I always have my seat belt on when flying. Always.

I was on a flight once that plummeted, and it dove so sharply that several people (I saw one a few rows up) who rocketed upwards when the plane dropped, and the one I saw smashed full tilt into the underside of the carry on compartments. There was an elderly woman in the head who had to be taken off on a stretcher.

We diverted, and spent the remainder of that flight with soda, coffee, food gravy, and other things dripping off the overhead onto us. (they had just finished serving right before the planed dropped)

They took three people off that flight on stretchers. All the other people? Before the drop, we were all strangers. After the drop, people were just yakking it up with everyone in every seat around them. Interesting how effectively danger can draw people together.

So, yeah...I keep my buckle fastened when flying.

Some of those “other things” that were dripping off the overhead may have already been ingested...lol..

“Sounds like the anti-stall system kicked in.”

Possibly.

Reports say the plane experience a steep ascent with high g loads.

Also, pilots went directly from flaps 20 to flaps 0 on the fully loaded plane.

1500’ after takeoff? Could be one of many things-—angle of attack was too steep? Micro burst or standing lenticular cloud nearby? Weight and balance off or something shifted in flight?

Who knows but dang, I would have pooped my pants.
