The Debate over the Origins of the War in Ukraine
American Thinker ^ | 13 Feb, 2023 | James Soriano

All wars are like car accidents, and all car accidents have causes. Trouble is, conflicting testimony will often produce different explanations of the cause.

The conventional view on the Russo-Ukraine War holds that Russia's invasion constitutes a grave act of injustice, amounting to an open-and-shut case of unprovoked aggression. War guilt rests solely on the shoulders of Russian president Vladimir Putin. "One man chose this war," American secretary of state Antony Blinken has said, "and one man can end it," echoing a widely shared view by foreign policy elites on both sides of the Atlantic. Variations of this version would add that Putin’s past words and deeds show that he had long planned for war, that he is bent on conquest, and that he wants to recreate the Russian Empire. In any case, the key point in all this is that the war stemmed from an act of Putin's will, nothing more.

The anti-war view is in the minority; it has no standing among foreign policy elites. Generally, the war critics see two principal chains of events leading up to the conflict. The primary one is the prospect of Ukraine joining the NATO alliance and Russia's well publicized record of warnings against that development. Over the years, Russia had repeatedly signaled that it would consider such a move a threat to its security. A full diplomatic history of the run-up to the war — of who said what to whom and when — lies in the future, but enough is now known to say that the first move was taken by NATO in 2008, when it formally invited Ukraine to become a member of the alliance. War critics say the U.S. had the influence to change this policy but chose not to do so.

What Mr. Slusher puts forth is pretty much how I’ve viewed this conflict. Thanks for the posting.

...which is why he yanked America OUT of Afghanistan. abandoning America s allies there.

Aside from my own, that's the first time anyone here - that I've seen - has made that connection. Clearly there was a reason for the mad-dash pullout; some of us knew exactly why when the Russian tanks rolled into uke.

...and some continue to live in denial, siding with obiden and the globalists.

I totally agree with what you wrote. The codicile to that is, the US and Russia are not reflective of the people inside of government.

America the idea, as founded is dead. Not near the edge of the cliff. It went over when the CIA, FBI and sitting Representatives pushed a lie about Trump. The coup de grac’ was the stolen 2020 election.

Define END. You mean Russia pulls back, the US sends in forces to hunt Putin and put him and his generals to trial in the Hague, and executes them?

My opinion, this only ends when Russia gets the land they desire, and solidify their hold, while neutralizing the US.

The first paragraph would mean world madness, the second, means the US pounded into the stone age. WE have the choice, butt out or have front row seats to a nuclear exchange.

It would be like if Mexico built plants on the border to manufacture fentanyl and meth, so the US invades to take them out...that would be righteous BTW, and Russia and China gang up and try to force the US back to its borders.

JMO, but it is a better fit than Putin evil, Ukraine full of Saints.

Do “good people” bomb and assault Iraq or Afghanistan for no other reason than we didn’t like their government or leadership?

What is that word that describes that, oh yeah HYPOCRITES.

do some more homework.

9/11 was an attack on us, on our soil

a more accurate example would be us bombing Mexico and saying it is really our country.

Which we have not done...

putin is an evil man who wants the old Soviet empire back

he would not stop at Ukraine

What did Iraq and Afghanistan have to do with 9/11. The so called perpetrators were Saudi.

“Osama bin Laden was a violent terrorist and founder of al Qaeda who killed thousands of innocent men, women, and children before his death in 2011.”

Al Qaeda is in Afghanistan

Saddam said he had weapons of mass destruction. turned out he didn’t

We didn’t say that Iraq or Afghanistan BELONG to us, like evil putin is claiming about Ukraine. Nor did we occupy and make them our territory

We helped Kuwait when saddam tried to take over their country.

Again, a true comparison would be us bombing Mexico and claiming it was our country.

Ukraine has been a country longer than putin/russia has.

putin would not stop at Ukraine. He wants the soviet empire back and maybe more...
