In the context of another thread here at Free Republic, I chanced to use the term "moral elephantiasis," which I remember from a long ago reading of National Review. Out of curiosity, I typed those two words into Google, in quotes, and found a number of interesting things.
One of the things I found was the full text of the original article which I read, at the age of 23 or so; that article had been read into the Congressional Record by then Georgia Congressman Larry McDonald. I transcribed the article (with significant help from the PDF OCR algorithm), and place it in the comment below.
The point of this exercise is to illustrate the long history of many of the media effects and manifestations we complain about today.
Notice that this article is so old that the term “the media” or “the main-stream media” doesn’t yet exist; that the dominant form of mass media at the time is television networks.
It’s like some early engineering articles about digital imaging, before the word “pixel” was invented.

Do you really think Rush made it all up about having a familial genetic disposition for hearing loss? If so, it comes as a disappointment. I believed him, and made no connection to his use of synthetic opioids.
But I am left with a question: if synthetic opioids cause deafness, why aren’t we seeing an epidemic of mass deafness among the legions of heroin and Fentanyl users with whom we are inundated these days?

No. I think he was lied to and rationalized the rest of it. No doctor will tell you that the drugs you were given were responsible for harm. He was worldly on politics, but he had his own bubble like the rest of us. He was human, after all.
The toxicity occurs in conjunction with other substances.
Rush admitted to both Vicodin and Oxy use. That combination is one which is known to result in damage to the auditory nerve.
I’ve heard that DMSO is less dangerous if you keep it in a Klein bottle :)
I think Congress waved its magic legislative wand and made those laws null and void as it related to the COVID "vaccinations."
Huh, no pun intended with respect to your screen name. Ironic. The only good thing that may come of it is that many among the population observed how the whole country can be stampeded into abandoning its legal protections by a sufficiently fearful circumstance. Perhaps in the future, memories of this incident will be used to give strength to the voices that may rise in opposition to the stampeding herd.
I personally know of one life-long leftist female who was so alarmed by the rush to have her only child vaccinated (against her wishes) in order to attend school or any after-school activities that she voiced a desire to move to a Republican-run state so her family could be protected. Her blind faith in leftism and the Democrat party was severely shaken by the whole thing, and she definitely noticed that it was the Republicans who were standing up for the rights of those who declined to dose themselves and their young children with an untried and pretty much ineffective "vaccine."
The woman I mention recently got her PhD in psychology and has spent her career working in the school system of a very blue state. For her to have her assumptions shaken in this way is striking. If she can was awakened, many others were as well I'm sure.

Did you know that Abbie Hoffman planned to mix LSD and DMSO and spray the resulting liquid at NYC police headquarters back in the mid-60s? He didn’t actually do it though.
I did not know her; but I knew Virginia Knauer’s family fairly well. It was an important movement, but like all things, when it gets past its beginnings it goes too far. This country has ruined itself with lawsuits.
