No, the MAY serve ten years. But they do not get a “ten year term”. They serve at the pleasure of the President, but may not EXCEED ten years. They are a mere head of a minor bureau inside the DOJ. They are not independent of the Chief Executive sitting in the White House and serve at his pleasure.

A President can fire and replace him with no reason needed.

Unless they get enough blackmail evidence. Which is really what Hoover built the FBI for, controlling the politicians. Especially the ones that could fire him.
