A Brazilian lawyer tragically died after his gun was discharged by an MRI machine’s magnetic field at the hospital.
The freak accident occurred on January 16 while the gun-loving lawyer, named Leandro Mathias de Novaes, was taking his mother to get scanned at the Laboratorio Cura in São Paulo, Jam Press reported. Unbeknownst to hospital staff, the attorney had a registered firearm in his possession.
Staff had reportedly asked the pair to remove all metal objects before entering the MRI room, as is protocol at hospitals due to the device’s powerful magnetic field. However, Novaes decided to go in sans announcing his concealed weapon.
Disaster struck after the machine yanked the weapon from his waistband, causing it to go off and strike the lawyer in the stomach. He was subsequently rushed to the São Luiz Morumbi Hospital, where he hung on for weeks, before eventually succumbing to his injuries on February 6.

There is a reason the MRI tech asks you these questions. I wish they would not be so nonchalant about it and be more attentive to the patient’s answers. Many patients do not realize the reason they ask the questions and think to themselves that “this key is my pocket is small, so shouldn’t be a problem since it is my pants rather than my shirt at the area they are doing the MRI”.
When I go for an MRI, I wear a sports bra with no hooks or wires, jogging pants with no zippers or metal buttons, plus no jewelry, nor hair clip.
I had a Cochlear Osia Baha placed under the skin near my deaf ear & the surgeon told me about staying away from them or having it removed before one is done on me. I’ve had one before, but years ago.
The Chinese Weather Balloon set it off.
Heard of a guy with metal plate in head who had a MRI. Feel sorry for the person who had to clean up that mess. Seriously isn’t a joke my brother has metal rod in his leg. Can’t get MRI. I think they have since made rods of non magnetic material.
A round in the chamber? Where else would it be?
When I asked the tech he said the magnetic field was 10 that of earth’s gravity. Or something like that. The one i just had his badge was attracted from 3 feet away and the machine wasn’t even ramped up for the test yet. Impressive technology. Listen to the person asking questions.
Darwin awards finalist. It was not a pretty scene when they discovered that East Bloc ferric metal dentistry and MRIs don’t mix happily.
Now there’s a dumb lawyer.............
bkmk
I’m conflicted.
Wow, family is allowed in the MRI room in Brazil?
This wouldn’t happen here, because MRI is for patient only. Unless they made exceptions for unstable elderly, as I’m sure they do for children.
How do you know what kind of firearm it was?
All I can assume is that it was a pistol. Not all pistols are semi-automatic.
In any case, somehow it was ready to fire.
Always carry with one in the chamber and a full magazine. I carry my .45 that very same way with the hammer cocked and the thumb safety on. Scary, huh?
That formula would prevent many of life's tragedies.
That is exactly how the ol' Gunner who taught us marksmanship told us how to do it - either that or words like if I ever see one of you ***ing ****ies do that, you will be kicked off my range bleading, screaming and crawling - if you are luck enough still to be alive - one or the other - I'm old an my memory doesn't serve like it used to.
Cartridges are usually made from non-magnetic metals. The primer might be the exception.
Clip?
MRI violence.
Everyone thinks they have time to rack the slide in a deadly self-defense encounter, even when the perp surprises them with the time and place of the attack - but the defender is always having to respond.
When one watches real-world, unsimulated self-defense videos, you learn that you have to go right away. It is absolutely cringeworthy watching someone racking a slide when multiple bullets have already started flying.
I watched one the other day where the good guy decided to go, but he had to check the condition of his gun first by turning his back to the perp. No bueno. Have it ready all the time, and it makes everyone safer.
