Monday open thread: Was the revamped Pro Bowl a success?

The 2023 Pro Bowl introduced a new format that eliminated the traditional tackle football all-star game that we’ve seen in years past. With players putting forth only a marginal effort and so many players opting out in the name of health and safety, the Pro Bowl simply hasn’t meant what it did in years past.

The NFL’s attempt at fixing this event featured skills challenges for several major position groups on Thursday night, then capped things off Sunday with three flag football games coached by the Manning brothers and a few more skills competitions.

Yesterday, Chris asked if you guys were fans of the new format. Now that we’ve seen the end result, did you think it was the right move?

Question of the day: Was the 2023 Pro Bowl a success?

I had briefly tuned in just to catch the “entertainment” portion, yeah, it was pretty much what you’d expect, and I clicked off after about 5 seconds.

The ProBowl move to the Sunday between the championships and the Super Bowl was a bad idea. Prior to that, some of the SB champs got to play in the game but now there is no chance for that to happen. Just sayin.

I wonder if that was a move dictated by the Players Union so that it would shorten the season.

We have disowned and detached ourselves from so much that it never even occurred to us to keep an eye out for it.

Born and raised near San Francisco, we we remember John Brodie and company and then some dark years before Bill Walsh changed football (in a good way). While a down-and-dirty powerful running game has it attractions, sending EVERYONE out as a receiver, watching the defense scramble to try and cover, and then, especially, watching a 5 yard pass turn into a 95 yard touchdown was something to behold. We used to watch the pre Bill Walsh 49ers practice in Redwood City. There were no high fences, no guards to speak of, because no one cared, no secret plays, no other team was ‘worried’ about playing them.

Along comes Colon Kraperjack, and that was it. Today, if I happen to connect a commercial for a product with most any sport, I make a mental note to never purchase it. Also, besides the wonderful Bill Walsh offense, watching Ronnie Lott demolish running backs and wide receivers never gets old. On the practice field, in the middle of the week, Lott had a cap with one word on the front: WAR. Besides the monstrous, physical hits on the opposing players, the epitome of his attitude was his finger injury. The end of his little finger broke. To set the break properly required surgery and rest. The team had just finished the regular season, and the playoffs were next. Instead of the proper, regular surgery anyone else would have chosen, he had the surgeon remove the tip of the finger. Issue solved, and he could concentrate on the next championship. The famous fierceness and hits would be Illegal in today’s watered-down football. Once Lott made enough money, he, like many other sports stars, invested in a restaurant. I doubt he would allow Colon to wash dishes in his restaurant.

I often spend some part of the weekend streaming Montana to Clark, Montana to Rice, and watch the 49er Superbowls. There are videos of Jerry Rice, and all of his 208 touchdowns (and no one is ever kneeling).

I loved The Superstars, the best part was when they did the “Simon Sez”.

Also I wish they’d bring back the Network Battle of the Ts and As, I mean Battle of the Network Stars.

I watched a “Pro Bowl” once, many years ago. It was the worst excuse for football I have ever witnessed, and I concluded that it was irretrievable.

Win or lose, it doesn’t mean anything. NOBODY is going to risk getting injured playing it, so they played totally half-assed.

Would you prefer the Pro Bowl or 3 hours of “Kars4Kids” commercials?

Sounds like the Bubble Wrap Bowl.

I haven’t watched a Pro Bowl in a long time.

Even the players weren’t all that interested. AFC QBs for example. Should be Mahomes, Burrow and Allen. Obviously Mahomes has a good excuse. Allen was “injured” but played in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am instead of the Pro Bowl. Burrow bagged out. Ended up with Trevor Lawrence, which was the best of the three who actually went, David Carr, and Tyrod Huntley. Tyrod Freakin Huntley; are you kidding me? He is a backup for goodness sake. And David Carr? Getting benched by your team and undoubtedly cut after the season gets you into the Pro Bowl???

If the players themselves don’t give a crap about it, why should fans?

Here’s a tough one to consider: would you have been able to tell the difference between the Pro Bowl and the Grammys?

INDEED it did stink. Sooooo in order to keep you busy with other activities like FREEPER page, how about a donation to JimRob and the group.

Monthly is awesome.. Painless. NO popups.

Only think I liked about that game that WE watched at our house for about 10 minutes, was the Manning boys. :)

They should change the name from the “Pro Bowl” to the “Hoover Bowl”.

It looked more like an afternoon romp in a park.

I watched about 5 minutes.
