20 YEARS AGO — Just the other day, I was sitting in my living room when I heard a loud bang from the basement. Undoubtedly, it was one of my kids destroying yet another piece of our home — but I'll never know.
That's because the noise made me turn my head, resulting in me hurting my back. Yes, a head turn can now hurt my back. When I was a kid, I'd ride my bike off a shed roof and hit the ground like a satellite returning to Earth's atmosphere. I'd then pop up, grab a popsicle and go play dodge ball for six hours.
My point is, I'm getting old. And the one thing that can make you feel old — more than a strained back from a head turn — is realizing the movies on this list are turning 20.
2003 gave us the final Concorde flight, the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, French fries became freedom fries, and Lance Armstrong was still the darling of the cycling world with his fifth Tour de France win.
Let it set in that all of this happened 20 years ago ... and that means the movies on this list, which were all released in 2003, are celebrating their 20th birthday in 2023.

I didn’t see any of them. I haven’t given Hollywood money in years. The last two movies I paid to see were Raiders of the Lost Ark and Standing in the Shadows of Motown.
Even most of those movies wouldn’t be made today. Too many straight, white people.
Didn’t see any of them. Last time I can remember going to a movie was in 1982 for “Trail of the Pink Panther”...Seller’s last. Have caught a lot of subsequent films on TV.
Bingo- last movie i paid to see was Pearl Harbor in 2000. They are not getting $0.02 of my money. (Granted i did see Led Zeppelin’s Celebration Day in 2008, but that’s doifferent)
Only the last on the list is worthy of mention.
Secondhand Lions was and still is one of the best movies from any year.
Most of these films don’t mean anything to me personally. There are bunch of films that came out about 40 years ago that do like Blade Runner, Conan the Barbarian, Firefox, First Blood, Rockey III, The Wrath of Khan.
I remember 6 of those movies...
Nice memories of watching movie videos with my children.
Many here would appreciate “Secondhand Lions,” I think.
Just made me feel glad I lived when movies were worth watching and remembering.
I’ve done well. Haven’t seen any of them.
Movies from 20 years ago will make you feel old? They make me feel young. Movies from 50 or 60 years ago make me feel old (although they were much better movies overall).
I didn’t find many films in 2003 appealing. ‘Master and Commander’ and ‘Mystic River’ were a couple that I liked. ‘School of Rock’ and ‘Return of The King’ were ok.
Seen a few of those but nothing on the list makes me feel old. Most of those have copies in the discount bins laying around for years.
Secondhand Lions is on my list of the three movies which teach best what a bot needs to learn about being a Man. The other two are ‘Open Range’ and ‘Broken Trail’ and all three star Robert Devall
I saw Return of the King but didn't love it because Jackson strayed too far from the books and damaged the characters too much. All the academy awards were clearly for the total accomplishment of the trilogy which I think was warranted.
Secondhand Lions is a good story, sort of a B movie that's a fun watch.
Same for Pirates of the Caribbean. Fun to watch and a revival of the pirate theme.
Saw Elf and didn't like it.
Didn't see the others. I no longer go to the movies but I saw all these in the theater.
I haven’t seen any of these either...The last movie I paid to see was “Iron Man” and that was in 2008....
You got that right. I love those movies. Another great Duvall movie was “Tender Mercies.” Duvall is one great actor. Duvall and Caine together in Secondhand Lions were outstanding.
I’ve seen Secondhand Lions on TV, none of the others, though I have seen the original Italian Job from 1969. Last movie I saw in a theater was Independence Day.
