It is believed the girl, from Perth, was riding jet skis with friends on the river when the incident happened.
Insp Paul Robinson, from Western Australia Police, said it was possible the girl had jumped in the water to swim with dolphins seen nearby.
Fisheries experts say it is unusual to find sharks in that part of the river, Mr Robinson said.
This is believed to be the first fatal shark attack in the Swan River since a 13-year-old boy was killed in January 1923.
Australia typically records about 20 shark attacks each year, with most in New South Wales and Western Australia.
There were two fatal shark attacks in 2021, and seven in 2020.

Bull sharks notoriously go up river in Africa, South American and north America. There was a good sized one hauled out of the Potomac a few years back and in the early decades of last century one was caught in the Mississippi River outside of Cairo, Illinois.
that bites...
The St Pete and Entire West Coast inter coastal areas are invested with bulls .
Some snowbird was killed by landing on a bull by jumping off a dock in St Pete Beach years ago. Do not swim very far out on any FL west coast beach and never at dusk to dawn .
My buddies and I used to get drunk and sit on this dock outside a bar in the Jax area. (Some here know of Whitey’s Fish Camp)
Anyhow, we’d be drunk out on the dock at night and you would see dozens upon dozens of eyes glowing from the exterior lighting...
Swimming anywhere in FL is dangerous.
That’s before talking of human to human encounters...
That’s a good one
Too bad about the girl
interesting .
The bulls Dorsal Fins glide from dusk to dawn on Big Sarasota Pass between the
Siesta key and S Lido Key .
It will make think twice about swimming there at any time.
Yes, I’m from Jax do not go swimming in the St John’s river. A really bad idea.
Partying with necks on Black Creek in Middleburg is interesting...
Black Creek was uninhabited when I lived in Orange Park.
20 shark attacks a year... no wonder they all took the shot...everything is trying to kill you!
That must have been quite a few years ago.
It was.
I camped out among huge cypress trees on ground not too elevated above alligators. ‘Wish someone had told me that wasn’t such a good idea!
LOL, at least you’re here now...
My Mom and nephew lived in Middleburg for years and my sister lived on Fleming Island. I was in OP. Eating and drinking at Whitey’s fish camp is fun. I like their fried gator tail.
I was Fleming Island, friends were “from the ‘Burg”.
I used to go to the gym in OP, and that’s where my USAF recruiter was.
I had gator tail once, and I was pretty hammered on Jack shots and beer.
Every hit the Mercury Moon across the street from Whitey’s?
It had a different name when I first moved there...
A case of ‘stupid games’, I guess...
