New Zealand is full of stunning, natural beauty and home to nearly 3,000 glaciers, which are huge tourist destinations. But the glaciers are quickly vanishing due to rising temperatures.
Robin Roberts visited Rotorua on an expedition of a lifetime and shared a first-hand look at the shrinking ice.
First, she suited up to hop in a helicopter for a bird's-eye view of the dangerously thin ice, which scientists call a critical part of the climate crisis.

Glaciers have been advancing and retreating throughout geological history. Human activity has nothing to do with it.
New Zealand does not have a large temperature range, lacking the extremes found in most continental climates. However, New Zealand weather can change unexpectedly - as cold fronts can quickly blow in. Because of this, you should be prepared for sudden changes in weather and temperature if you are going hiking or doing other outdoor activities.
Spring
September, October, November
Average daytime temperature: 16 - 19°C (61 - 66°F)
Summer
December, January, February
Average daytime temperature: 20 - 25°C (68 - 77°F)
Autumn
March, April, May
Average daytime temperature: 17 - 21°C (62 - 70°F)
Winter
June, July, August
Average daytime temperature: 12 - 16°C (53 - 61°F)
Sorry, bit it's the last month of summer right now south of the equator. Winter down there occurs in our summer months here, north of the equator. But the weather doesn't change much during the seasons.
No, you were correct, it is summer in NZ right now since they are south of the equator.
February is the warmest month in most of New Zealand. Think it was a coincidence that Robin Roberts was sent there now to hype (hemispheric) warming?
How is a glacier a glacier if it isn’t melting? Isn’t that what glaciers do? If they didn’t, we would be in an ice age.
“The rapid retreat has created a long-term threat to locals who deeply rely on glacier tourism.”
I thought the long-term threat was a rise in sea level.
Learn something new every day./s
smh
Are those average winter temps near sea level? Or is it an average of all elevations?
They got the ice and snow somehow. Hard for it to accumulate if the cold front isn’t there at least half the time in winter.
To be honest none of what I saw looked like glaciers to me, just snow covered mountains. NZ is about 9000 miles from the north pole, 3,000 miles from the south pole, and about 3,000 miles from the equator. those are all rough estimates.
Okay I was pretty close.
North pole: 8,764.32 mi (14,104.81 km) How far is Auckland from the North Pole? Auckland is located 8,764.32 mi (14,104.81 km) south of the North Pole.
Equator: 2,545.91 mi (4,097.25 km) How far is Auckland from the equator and on what hemisphere is it? Auckland is 2,545.91 mi (4,097.25 km) south of the equator, so it is located in the southern hemisphere.
South pole: 3,671.81 mi (5,909.20 km) How far is it from Auckland to the South Pole? From Auckland to the South Pole, it is 3,671.81 mi (5,909.20 km) in the north.
Volcanoes, summer, of course glaciers shrink.
