PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. — It’s Groundhog Day and people are waiting to learn whether a furry critter in a western Pennsylvania town will predict an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
People will gather Thursday at Gobbler’s Knob as members of Punxsutawney Phil’s “inner circle” summon him from his tree stump at dawn to learn if he has seen his shadow. According to folklore, if he sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, spring comes early

If I could rid my life on the farm of worthless groundhogs I would. I hate those destructive burrowing pests - undermining building foundations, digging holes in pastures for livestock to bust their legs off and girdle and kill young trees. Oh, I have heard stories of farmers driving tractors on the side of a hill and the downhill wheel drops into a hole and the tractor flips and kills the operator. They proliferate like rats and I can’t think of one good reason for their existence. I’ll have to seek God’s advice on that one.
The idea is that if it snows or rains in Punxsutawney PA on February 2, then Phil will not see his shadow. It’s only happened 20 times in 138 years.
Saw shadow: 108 times
No shadow: 20 times
No record of what happened: 10 times

According to the Stormfax Weather Almanac, all told over a century-plus—and there are years in the early days of the tradition for which no records were preserved—the groundhog has a 39% rate of accuracy.
