Beware of Walmart credit card fraud

Found out this morning my card was hacked. Someone bought an 799 dollar computer and a 3 dollar bottle of hot pink fingernail Polish.Some “Edgar Martinez” picked it up at a Walmart in Pa. but I live in In.

Forgot to mention, the charges on my debit,card were,all for,like $4.24, $5.33 or some such small figures- there were a ton of them on the card, and my bank never alerted me to suspicious activity. And all the charges were to something like “truetv” (can’t recall,the name right now, but I looked it up,and sure enouhg it is a scam going back a few years! The bank should have caught the action as once before a hacker hacked my card, did a ‘trial run by charging 2 cents to,the card- the bank caught it immediately and shut my card down. Not,sure why tons of small,charges to one company name wasn’t caught, butmit went on for weeks on end before i realized ehat was happening as i dont use the card,that much)

Same here, cash only at gas stations, and even restaurants. Cash at Goodwill too.

It was a capital one credit card connected to Walmart online accounts.

I’ve only used it a few times, the last time about a month ago when I ordered a car part. Must have been then someone hacked it (or like I said a I suspect a data breach as it happened to the cop too).

Well, just about every state has a Data Breach Reporting law. I'm in Alabama, and mine is Alabama Data Breach Security Law 2018 S.B. 318, Act No. 396

Basically, these laws REQUIRE companies that store personal and financial information to immediately report data breaches. If not, big fines.

I would contact Walmart directly and ask them if this has occurred, and what have they reported, in compliance with Indiana law?

I teach cyber security to businesses IT staff, and the stories I hear about things getting sweept under the rug are everyday. I then remind those staff members that the law applies to them, too, not just corporate, and whatever management tells you to sweep under the rug, get that order in WRITING and fine detail about specific acts.

Happened to my neighbor recently with Amazon delivery. Same deal. Took pic of pkg, but grabbed the pkg back. It was something stupid. Household use brushes. She had him on her front door camera.

Also happened to me by UPS in 2019. My car/credit card was stolen by a local drug addict/criminal. I get a new card delivered by UPS. They drive by but don’t get out. Then I’m getting alerts my new card is being used. I was getting it every which way that year.

Had that happen in 2018 with my Sam’s Club Credit Card. I wasn’t getting alerts at the time. Checked my account online after a few days of not checking it. Found out someone had been making huge gas purchases in Kingman AZ. I’m in CO.

Also this past year someone opened a $30,000 business account in my name through Chase. Luckily my free credit monitoring, coincidentally through Chase, reported to me that an inquiry had been made into my credit history through Equifax. I was able to get the fraudulent account stopped the next day before they could use it.

Check your cards. Both my debit and CC have the Lock/Unlock feature. I unlock via my cellphone before a transaction then lock following the transaction.

Takes only a few seconds. And they also will do it at the pumps with similar ease.

It’s the shopping app that is bleeding account or card data.

Do not use the app and be sure to delete your card information out of the app before you delete the app.

This has been going on for nearly a year that I am aware of.

Thanks for the info. Since both you and the policeman live in the same Indiana town, I suspect the data breach problem may be somehow connected to your local Walmart store. What does Capital One tell you?

I foreswore off Wal-Mart.com when I bought a Kershaw knife thru them, from one of their partner retailers. The retailer sent the wrong knife and refused to communicate with me. Wal-Mart offered no help...there wasn’t even a way to leave a complaint with Wal-Mart. (Luckily, the knife the seller sent was already a known favorite of mine.)

Heck, even eBay generally has a money back guarantee if you follow their rules/timeline. Money is automatically credited back if that seller doesn’t respond.

I got hit last week for $1,850 for a Lenovo laptop delivered to a town 50 miles away. We figured it was a Walmart hack as it was the only place the card had been used recently.

thanks, yeah=- im pretty sure that is how i was hacked- for online purchases now, i get a gift card- wait till i need close to the amount that is on the card- and use that instead of the debit

It’s hard to remember, it all was sort of quick. I think they said it was through our local Walmart in Indiana but it was delivered to a Walmart in Pennsylvania. I know there was a second attempt made for close to the same amount yesterday but it was blocked due to suspicious activity. I just hate that these total dirt bags are getting new computers when I have a refurbished one I got for 350 dollars. Apparently Crime DOES pay. By the way they must be hacking Walmart security. I guess in a sick way Walmart is making MORE sales having weak online security , since Capital-one will reimburse me they are sort of a legal larcenist. I’m DONE with Walmart online sales, now I have to change all my info even when I donate to FREEREPUBLIC.
