Vitamin A may protect the heart from some effects of obesity

Research in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity has found greater disruption to genes involved in heart function when coupled with vitamin A deficiency using a combined dietary and genetic approach.

The research team induced obesity in a mouse model of vitamin A deficiency. After 20 weeks, the researchers compared the hearts and metabolism of the mice to obese mice with sufficient levels of vitamin A. In comparison, the vitamin-deficient obese mice had repression of genes in the heart that are associated with extracting energy from fat, extracting energy from glucose, and the production of the energy-carrying molecule adenosine triphosphate.

All of these areas are critical to metabolic functioning.

"Our study identifies a role for vitamin A in preserving cardiac energetic gene expression that might attenuate subsequent development of mitochondrial and contractile dysfunction in diet-induced obesity," the researchers wrote.

It would be healthier to just diet and exercise. Seriously, it does wonders for both the mind and body and increases ones life span.

Those three and four hundred pounders not even 6 feet tall are headed for a premature grave.

Don’t believe me? To get an idea what its like to be 200 pounds overweight, take five 40 pound cement blocks, tie them to your body and just do a full day’s activity with them strapped to you.

Those that are morbidly obese have mental issues.

If a person is under 50 and obese, my wager is on over-eating/poor food choice and lack of exercise for the vast majority [Don’t believe me? Look at a photo of a crowd taken anytime before 1970 and compare to 2022]. Not saying its someone’s fault. Our modern lifestyles are basically sedentary and healthy home cooking is a disappearing skill. So it does take conscientious effort to keep trim and fit. A pill, whatever it is, will never be a substitute. Washing down a Vit A pill with 4 cheeseburgers ain’t gonna do it.

No argument from me on that. I’m a gym rat, and I eat healthy.
I’m training for Masters Track and Field and make sure I can still pass qualification for USAF PJ Indoc every year. Upper 40’s…

In Sweden, people noticed that people with more retinol have more bone problems. They stopped adding retinol to milk.

There are more kids with allergies among kids that consume more retinol.

Foods have more retinol than we need. People who take multivitamins with retinol make their problems worse.

If you want your bones to break, become diabetic, and your liver to stop working, consume more retinol.

I drive a desk for my work [licensed profession] for last 30 years. Am also a life-long sportsman [not shooting] - bike, run, swim [sometimes all 3 in same event], every ball sport imaginable, and lots of the less popular stuff [backpacking, skiing, etc] until about 10 years ago when I slowed up on the more intense stuff.

So now I do a hard 3-4 mile walk [with appx. 1,000 ft elevation gain] 2-3x’s/week. Total time commitment is 45 mins per walk. Not a gym rat!

At 56 yrs old I’m still at my HS weight, +- a few lbs depending on season. Time can be made very easily [cut out a few hrs from the net, TV, whatever]. At least 3/4 of my meals are made in my own kitchen, pasta and red meat are my staples. I don’t eat McD’s but do my fair part on the fried chicken.
